Brooklyn, NY
(Oct. 3, 2017) – Is there anybody better in crunch time than
Rob Cal?
The Panther standout delivered his third game-winning goal of the season Tuesday night, lifting visiting Purchase College to a rousing 2-1 road win at St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn. Cal (JR/Port Jervis, NY) ended SJC-BKLYN's attempt at its first conference victory of the fall in the waning seconds of regulation.
With the game appearing headed for overtime, tri-captain
Anthony Iurillo (SR/Whitestone, NY) set up for a Purchase free kick from 30 yards, which he would bang off of the right post. Cal was in position for the rebound and go-ahead goal, as he tapped the ball in with 13 seconds on the clock for the one-goal victory at Aviator Field.
Heartbreak special for the hosts. Another thrilling outcome for the charging Panthers.
Purchase is now 6-5-1, but more importantly remains undefeated in league play at 3-0-1. The loss dropped St. Joseph's to 0-8-1 and 0-4.
The Panthers opened up the scoring early (11'), as the SJC keeper aggressively came out of the net and tri-captain
Kayode Tyler (SR/Nyack, NY) dribbled around him for an easy tap-in and a 1-0 Purchase advantage.
Despite allowing the goal, the Bears outshot Purchase 8-4 in the first. However, at intermission the visitors held a 1-0 lead.
Kenneth Garcia answered shortly after the break, setting up for a free kick in the 54th minute and subsequently scoring it into the upper right-hand corner of the net to even the game at 1-1.
But the stalemate would allow for a hero to emerge in the second half – a place Cal has shined offensively this season. And he didn't disappoint in crunch time.
