CMSV Edges Purchase in OT

Purchase, NY (Oct. 7, 2017) – Purchase's Skyline Conference unbeaten streak came to an end in a tough 2-1 overtime defeat to the College of Mount Saint Vincent Saturday at home.

The men's soccer team outshot the Dolphins 20-15, including 16-7 in the second half, but a second period goal by CMSV knotted the game at 1-1 after red-hot Rob Cal (JR/Port Jervis, NY) handed the Panthers a 1-0 first-half lead.

Cal, the team's leading scorer, netted his sixth of the fall in the 31st minute, as Purchase led 1-0 at intermission.

The Panther defense kept it there, but CMSV's Robert Photos caught a break in scoring his first of the season off a deflection in the 69th minute. A free kick rebounded off a Purchase player in front of the goal, and paved the way for the score.

It remained 1-1 the rest of the second half, despite a slew of scoring opportunities by Purchase, as well as a handful of key saves from netminder Jordan Meade (FR/Olivebridge, NY).

Meade made two sterling stops that preserved the 1-1 score, while teammate Thomas Browne (FR/Carle Place, NY) nearly handed the hosts the game-winning goal on multiple accounts. The forward shared the team lead in shots (four) with midfielder Yianni Amvrosiatos (JR/Warwick, NY).

However, the best scoring chance for Purchase came in the final six minutes, when forward Aidan Leavens (JR/Whitestone, NY) hit the cross bar.

The extra session allowed CMSV to regroup. The Dolphins registered three early shots, including the game winner. Luciano Cirelli scored his first of the season on a through ball from Julius Tumukunde in the 97th minute to seal the victory.

In defeat, Purchase is now 6-6-1 overall and 3-1-1 in league play. The win improved the Dolphins to 5-4-1, including 3-1-1 in the Skyline.
