(Oct. 4, 2017) – The SUNY Maritime women's volleyball team improved to 7-6 on the year after defeating Purchase 3-0 on Wednesday night at Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium.
Maritime's Shannon Brady led the way for the Privateers with 16 kills in the match. Abby Steele added seven kills while teammate Erika Kirchner recorded a game-high 28 assists for the match.
Maritime opened the first set with a 6-1 run and would control the rest of the set from there. The Privateers would go on to win the opening set 25-9.
In the second set, Maritime again got off to a fast start leading 9-2, but allowed Purchase to hang around. After Purchase cut the lead to one, 19-18, Maritime responded with four aces in a row. Maritime would win the second set 25-19.
Purchase raced out to a 5-1 lead in the third set. After trailing 8-5, Maritime rattled off seven points in a row, making the score 12-8.
Both teams traded points back and forth as Maritime lead by two points, up 16-14. From that point on, Maritime took control, scoring five unanswered points to make it 21-14, and eventually would go on to win the third set 25-17.
The Panthers were paced by
Maura Gribbins (JR/Buffalo, NY), six kills and 11 digs, and
Alex Lally (SR/Mesquite, TX), two blocks, eight assists and two aces.
Isis Gonzalez (SO/New York, NY) added two assists and seven digs.
Up next, Purchase (0-11, 0-2 Skyline) will host St. Joseph's College-LI Tuesday at 7 p.m.
