Women's Basketball Falls at Home to Yeshiva

Purchase, NY (Feb. 12, 2017) – A tough shooting day coupled with a solid performance from the visitors turned into a 65-53 loss for the Purchase women's basketball team against visiting Yeshiva University on Sunday.

Purchase (2-19, 1-15 SKY) started the game slowly and shot just 27.7 percent (8-29) in the game's opening half but rebounded to shoot 38.3 percent (13-34) in the second half.  The rally was not enough however as the Maccabee offense continued to rack up the points, shooting an impressive 50 percent (9-18) in the final quarter and 75 percent (12-16) from the free-throw line.

Yeshiva held a sizeable 57-30 advantage in total rebounds, led by Cichal Alge who tallied 24 rebounds for the Maccabees.

Neither side was able to score a basket over the game's first minute of play until Laura Betesh sunk a 3-pointer to put Yeshiva on the board.

The Maccabees would score another four points before Purchase opened its scoring off a layup from junior guard Kayla Ortiz (Brooklyn, NY) at 5:15.

Yeshiva led 24-17 at the half and held its lead for the remainder of the game.  Purchase would come within three late in the third quarter but seven unanswered points by the Maccabees put the Panthers behind 44-34 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Panthers were never able to get on track in the final period, as the Maccabees countered each basket to secure the 12-point victory.

Alge not only led the scorebook in boards, she tallied a game-best 23 points in her double-double performance.  Teammate Simee Rosner also notched a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds, while Laura Betesh chipped in with 12 points and four assists.

For Purchase, Ortiz netted a team-high 20 points while tying with senior center Frances Minaya (San Fernando, CA) for four steals apiece.  Minaya totaled 11 points and four rebounds, while senior guard April Uhl (Jackson Heights, NY) totaled 13 points for the Panther offense.

Up next, the Rams of Farmingdale State will host the Panthers on Tuesday for a Skyline Conference game starting at 5:30 p.m.
