Softball Opens Season Albertus Magnus

New Haven, CT (March 29, 2017) – Purchase played its season opener Wednesday at Albertus Magnus.

The Panthers lost 6-5 and 10-2 at Celentano Field, dropping both ends of the non-conference twin bill.

The Falcons took game one after scoring the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth, and wrapped up the afternoon in the nightcap.

In the process, the Falcons extended their win streak to six. They are 8-4. Purchase is now 0-2.

Laura Anderson earned the win in the circle in the opener for the hosts. Rachel Stockinger (FR/Putnam Valley, NY) took the loss for Purchase.

Purchase opened the game with the early 1-0 advantage following a RBI sacrifice fly from Kelly Hayes (SO/Staten Island, NY).

Magnus answered back scoring a run in the bottom of the inning as Anderson picked up the RBI single allowing Gillian Fortier to score. The Falcons' threat continued as bases were loaded with two outs, but Brianna Whitfield ended the threat with a strikeout.

The Panthers added two more runs to their total in the top of the second to push their lead to two, 3-1.

The hosts would go on to score four runs on four hits in the second inning of game one.

Purchase continued to swing the bat and tied the game at 5-5 following a two-run inning. With two outs and runners on second and first, Mary Adams (SR/Milton, PA) and Antonina Fiore (JR/Mount Sinai, NY) hit back-to-back RBI before the final out was collected.

In the sixth, Magnus' Daysia Wehder sealed the win for the Falcons as the catcher recorded her third home-run of the season.

In game two, Whitfield gave the Falcons the early 1-0 lead after scoring on a passed ball by the Panthers' pitcher.

Purchase finally broke the silence in the top of the fourth as the visitors scored two runs on three hits to take a 2-1 lead over the Falcons.

But in the fifth, the Falcon bats came alive. The hosts scored nine runs on eight hits to finish the game 10-2.

Magnus finished the game 12 of 26 at the plate while the Panthers went 3 of 18.
