(April 1, 2017) – Farmingdale state received strong pitching performances from senior Matt Seelinger and rookie Joe Marino as the Rams swept a Skyline Conference doubleheader from visiting Purchase College, 4-0 and 9-0, on Saturday afternoon.
Seelinger (1-1) earned the win in the opener after tossing 7.2 shutout innings, allowing two hits and striking out seven. Marino (2-0) picked up the win in game two after 5.2 shutout innings of work, allowing only two hits.
Game One: Farmingdale 4, Purchase 0
In the bottom of the first, sophomore right fielder Nick Attardi led off with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a groundout by Cam Alfano. Freshman left fielder Vincent Rice followed with an RBI single to left to put Farmingdale State (8-9, 5-1) on top, 1-0.
With two outs and runners on second and third in the bottom of the fifth, a 2 RBI single up the middle by Alfano extended the FSC lead to 3-0. The Rams added the final run of the game in the sixth inning for the 4-0 victory.
Attardi was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while junior second baseman Domenic Palumbo had two hits, including a double, in four at-bats and scored a run.
Purchase (0-7, 0-4) was held to only two hits in the loss.
Game Two: Farmingdale 9, Purchase 0
The Rams jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on an Alfano RBI single to right which scored Attardi, who led off the inning with a double. After Alfano scored on a wild pitch, Farmingdale State added an unearned run to take a 3-0 advantage.
Senior first baseman Dalton McCarthy led off the bottom of the third with a single and later advanced to second on a wild pitch. After sophomore designated hitter Joseph Roche singled up the middle, McCarthy scored on a double steal to put FSC ahead, 4-0.
Leading 5-0 in the bottom of the fifth, freshman third baseman Tyler Schrimpf led off with a double and came around to score on a Palumbo RBI single down the left field line. Three batters later, the Rams extended the advantage to 7-0 on a bases loaded RBI single to center by freshman first baseman Justin Norcini. After an Alfano infield single, a 2 RBI single through the left side from McCarthy put Farmingdale State out in front, 9-0.
McCarthy finished game two 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs batted in, while Palumbo was 3-for-4 with a double, run scored and RBI. Soriano tallied a pair of hits to go along with two runs scored and Alfano was 2-for-3 with a run scored and RBI.
The Panthers return to their home diamond tomorrow for a Skyline doubleheader against St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) starting at 11 a.m.
