Purchase, NY
(April 2, 2017) – St. Joseph's College-BKLYN took two from Purchase College Sunday. The Bears earned an 13-3 victory in the opener and capped the afternoon in a 5-1 win.
In game one, Purchase started strong as centerfielder and leadoff man
Ronald Pressley (SR/Bronx, NY) smashed a triple into the gap and would score on a sacrifice fly by co-captain
Teofilo Ramirez (SR/Queens, NY).
The Panthers held 1-0 lead after one and a 2-1 mark heading into the third.
SJC-BKLYN tied the game 1-1 in the top half of the second, but the Panthers kept rolling after taking the lead again in the second and made it 3-1 on a Ramirez RBI in the third, which plated rookie
Gavin Brien (FR/Brooklyn, NY).
However, the Bears broke the game open with four runs in the fifth, chasing starter
Nicholas Palmerini (FR/Northport, NY).
SJC-BKLYN added three runs in the seventh, three in the eighth and two in the ninth on its way to the game-one win.
Purchase's
John Fitzgerald (FR/Wantagh, NY) added the other RBI, while
Brian Cunningham (SO/Westbury, NY) contributed two hits in the opener.
SJC-BKLYN's Jim Kennedy (three hits and three RBI) and Kevin Linitz (two hits and three RBI) led the offense. Starter Mitch Brigando improved to 3-0 in the complete-game win.
In game two, the Panthers had two runners on in the first, but failed to bring them across. SJC-BKLYN were held scoreless in the first and then scored two in the second and one in the third for a 3-0 lead.
Errors troubled Purchase early as the Bears jumped in front against Ramirez, who started the second game on the hill.
In the bottom of the third, the Panthers loaded the bases with one out for Cunningham. Cunningham blasted a shot to right, but Anthony DeFillippo made a diving catch. Instead of extra bases for Cunningham and company, the sparkling grab turned into a sacrifice fly and limited the rally.
In the process, Bears starter Connor Pasetti limited the damage.
Purchase trailed 3-1 heading into the sixth, where the Bears tacked on two insurance runs.
Kennedy collected two hits in game two. Teammate Adam Schwartz had two RBI in the win. Pasetti earned the complete-game win on the mound. He is 4-0 on the spring.
