(April 5, 2017) – Paced by a strong offensive showing, the Purchase College baseball team stopped a nine game skid and earned their first wins of the season with convincing 18-3 and 18-1 wins against visiting Yeshiva University Wednesday afternoon.
Game One: Purchase 18, Yeshiva 3
Purchase senior outfielder
Ronald Pressley (Bronk, NY) took advantage of a wild pitch and came home to score the opening run of the game in the bottom of the first inning.
Yeshiva answered back in the second frame with two runs off an Elan Paul 2-RBI single to left field.
A RBI single from Pressley in the bottom half of the inning, brought in the tying run for Purchase. The Panthers added another in the third after
John Fitzgerald (FR/Wantagh, NY) doubled down the left field line to bring teammate
Patrick Rucci (SR/Cortlandt Manor) around to score.
Yeshiva scored their third and final run of the game in the top of the fourth inning. With the score tied at three, Purchase exploded in the bottom half of the inning, scoring five runs on four hits.
Teofilo Ramirez (SR/Queens, NY) batted in the winning run, while Rucci,
Michael Tecci (SRStratford, CT),
Taylor Ringold (SR/South Setauket, NY) and Fitzgerald collected the next four RBI, respectively.
The Panthers added another run in the fifth and nine in the sixth to secure the 18-3 victory 7-inning victory.
Fitzgerald went 4-for-5 with six RBI, two doubles and a triple in the opener. Ringold chipped in with two hits on four appearances and collected a triple, double and two RBI. Pressley went 2-for-2 with three runs and a RBI.
Rookie ace
Elijah Tait (FR/Teaneck, NJ) (1-0) earned his first career win on the mound, while Yeshiva's Paul (0-2) was tabbed with the loss.
Game Two: Purchase 18, Yeshiva 1
Purchase junior pitcher Jonathon Deacon (Lindenhurst, NY) (1-0) was the story in game two. He went 5.0 innings, fanning six and allowing one run on four hits.
The game featured 18 runs on 14 hits by the Panthers.
Sophomore
Brian Cunningham (Westbury, NY) paced the Panther offense, going 3-for-3 with three RBI, three runs and a triple. Rucci also went 3-for-3 with three RBI, while Ringold went 2-for-2 and tallied his second triple of the day in game two.
Wednesday's sweep moves Purchase to 2-9 on the season and to 2-6 in Skyline play. Yeshiva remains winless and falls to an overall record of 0-13, 0-10 in the league.
The Panthers will be back on the diamond Wednesday when they play host to Skyline foe Maritime College.
