(April 1, 2017) – The Purchase College men's volleyball team hosted St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) and Kean University on Saturday in a Skyline Conference tri-match. The Panthers started off by sweeping St. Joe's, 3-0, in the second match of the day but finished by losing, 3-0, to Kean in the final match. Kean shutout St. Joe's, 3-0, in the opening match.
Purchase is now 14-6 overall and 4-3 in conference play. Kean advances to 20-8 overall and remains undefeated 6-0 in the Skyline, while St. Joe's drops to 2-27 and 0-7 in the league.
Game One: Kean 3, St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) 0
Kean jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back as the Cougars won the three sets by scored of 25-5, 25-6 and 25-9.
The Cougars hit .642 as a team, led by junior Jacob Kauffman who played in only two sets and tallied five kills on five attempts without a single error (1.000). Rookie Steven Zarzycki registered an impressive six kills (.500) in the third set, while setter Ian Capp recorded three kills, two service aces and a match-high 20 assists. Junior Jared Warner paced the defense with three total blocks.
Game Two: Purchase 3, St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) 0
The middle match saw Purchase take a three-set victory from St. Joe's by scores of 25-10, 25-10 and 25-11.
Senior setter
Andrew Schwab (Merrick, NY) guided the Panther offense to a .435 team hitting percentage as he registered a match-high 11 assists and 10 kills (.750). Senior outside hitter
Kevin Carges (Brockport, NY) knocked down 9 winners, two service aces and three total blocks, senior setter
Riley Damerell (Rochester, NY) chipped in with nine digs, eight assists, six kills and two service aces.
Also shining bright for the Panthers was freshman middle hitter
Ethan Huang (Queens, NY) as he provided five kills and four total blocks. Sophomore
Luke Kubisch (Delmar, NY) five kills and two service aces and freshman
Andreo Otiniano (Mamaroneck, NY) amassed 10 assists and two aces in the winning effort.
Game Three: Kean 3, Purchase 0
Kean earned its second win of the day in three straight sets against host Purchase College. The Cougars took the three sets by scores of 25-10, 25-11 and 25-18.
Sophomore Nick Buseski paced both the offense and defense for Kean with nine kills and five total blocks, both match highs. Teammates Shayron Taylor and Jacob Milnazik chipped in with six kills apiece, while Capp directed the offense with a match-best 20 assists.
Purchase will return to action next Saturday with a Skyline tri-match hosted by Ramapo College. The Panthers are set to take on the Sage Colleges at 5:30 p.m. followed by the host Roadrunners at 7 p.m.
