Purchase, NY
(April 12, 2017) – Behind the team's three offensive stars, the Purchase College women's lacrosse team won its first conference game of the season Wednesday night at home.
The hosts soundly defeated SUNY Maritime College 17-9 to improve to 2-6 and now 1-4 in the Skyline Conference. The loss drops the Privateers to 1-7, including 1-3 in league play.
Panther attacker
Kelly Turtell (JR/Farmingdale, NY) opened the scoring in the first minute of the game. She was assisted by
Emma Porter (JR/Homer, NY).
Maritime answered back on a free position goal by Catherine Pfundstein two minutes later.
The high scoring opening stanza continued with
Zoe Hines (JR/Maplewood, NJ) helping Purchase seize the lead right back. She scored off another assist from Porter to make it 2-1 (25:15).
Then the Panthers got rolling offensively. Porter stayed hot and followed with a score before Hines made it 4-1 off an assist from Turtell. The hosts held the three-goal advantage 11 minutes into the contest.
Midway through the half, the Privateers cut the deficit in half as midfielder Ciara Murphy found the back of the net.
But Porter got it back for Purchase immediately, netting her 21st goal of the season a little over a minute after Murphy's score.
Purchase bumped the score to 6-2 on a free position attempt of its own. Turtell fed Porter for her third goal of the game and her second straight. Porter then nabbed her fourth goal of the game – this time off an assist from Turtell as the trio of Porter, Turtell and Hines continued to put their imprint on the game.
Hines increased the lead to 8-2 with just under six minutes in the half. She scored off a nice feed from Porter.
The Panthers allowed one more score to Pfundstein, but finished off the half with two more by Hines for a commanding 10-3 margin.
Purchase started the second half strong as well.
Madi Smith (JR/Lagrangeville, NY) scored to open the period and make it 11-3.
Courtney Salatto kept Maritime in the game by scoring her third of the season to bring the visitors back within seven goals (11-4).
However, it was Porter's night. The junior midfielder/attacker scored her fifth of the evening, tying Hines to that point to make it 12-4.
Maritime's Pfundstein scored her third of the game, which made it 12-5, but the see-saw battle in the second half continued with Turtell answering back. She netted her second of the night.
The two teams traded scores at around the midway point. Hines scored her sixth of the night in the process and it stood 14-6 in favor of Purchase with 15:56 remaining.
Over the final 15 minutes, Maritime and Purchase continued the story of the second half, trading goals. The visitors would score three more times, while the Panthers managed three goals of their own, including one from
Meaghan Gillen (FR/Port Jervis, NY), a free position score from
Virginia Redlon (JR/Carmel, NY) and the third of the game from Turtell. Redlon's score capped the scoring for the Panthers.
Pfundstein finished with four scores for Maritime. Teammate Shannon Brady and Murphy added two goals apiece.
Hines finished with six goals on the night. Porter and Turtell added five and three, respectively. Porter amassed 11 points (five goals and six assists).
