(Sept. 12, 2017) – The Yeshiva University women's volleyball team came back from two sets down to win a five-setter over Purchase College, 3-2, at the ARC Arena (Baruch College) on Tuesday evening.
Set scores were 16-25, 21-25, 25-16, 25-13, and 15-13.
Leading the way for Yeshiva was middle blocker Abigail Epstein, who totaled a home a team-high eight kills. Outside hitter Dalia Sieger anchored the defense by leading all players with 25 digs, and scored three service aces on offense. Setter Yael Ghelman produced a team-high 19 assists, while adding 14 digs.
Following two wins in the first two sets, Purchase got off to a strong start in the third set, taking an 8-4 advantage.
However, Yeshiva's rally would begin The third set concluded with Yeshiva being awarded a point due to a rotation error by Purchase, giving YU the win, 25-16.
Yeshiva (1-4, 1-3 Skyline) carried its momentum into game four by scoring 12 unanswered points to take a 13-1 lead en route to the win.
The Panthers jumped out to an 8-5 advantage in the fifth set. After Yeshiva pulled to within 11-10, they tied the match.
In the deciding set, Ghelman once again scored a service ace to give Yeshiva its first lead.
After the Panthers regained the advantage, 13-12, Sieger produced a kill to deadlock the game at 13.
Back-to-back poor sets by Purchase clinched the match and Yeshiva's first Skyline win of the season.
Purchase (0-2, 0-1) was paced offensively by
Maura Gribbins (JR/Buffalo, NY),
Alex Lally (SR/Mesquite, TX) and
Katie Haynes (SR/Johnson City, NY).
Gribbins recorded 14 kills, while Lally and Haynes netted 10 and six, respectively. Haynes also notched seven aces in the narrow defeat, where Purchase was without two starters on the evening.
Lally and Haynes were the defensive leaders with two blocks on the night.
Cynthia Plackis (SR/East Northport, NY) also performed well on defense, leading the team with an impressive 22 digs.
Setter
Noelle Miller (SO/Chittenango, NY) finished with a match-high 29 assists.
Purchase returns to action Thursday on the road. The Panthers' home opener is set for Saturday, Sept. 23 against CCNY.
