Purchase, NY
(Sept. 27, 2017) – Who says you can't find soccer nirvana on a baseball diamond?
An electrical power outage hit Purchase College early Wednesday and affected not only power, but the overhead lighting on the program's primary turf field – home to the Panther soccer and lacrosse teams.
All electrical efforts were made to get the power going in time for the 7 p.m. start, but once it became clear that the game could be postponed, "Plan B" arose: Turn turf field two – the baseball field complex, also designed for NCAA regulation soccer and lacrosse – into the new destination for tonight's women's soccer game between Purchase and visiting Sarah Lawrence.
Thankfully, the lighting on the baseball diamond was unaffected by the outage – up and going – and within 30 minutes, the Panthers and the Gryphons were underway at 7:30 p.m., playing to the tune of a 2-0 shutout by host Purchase under the lights of the baseball field.
In the process, the women's soccer program played – and won – their first ever home game at the baseball field complex.
There was no shortage of Panther power on the baseball diamond, making for a different home run of sorts.
The Panther defense matched SLC's feisty efforts.
And while the first half was dominated by the strong defenses, midfielder
Emma Porter (SR/Homer, NY) provided the eventual game-winning goal on an assist from
Tori La Fata (JR/East Meadow, NY).
Purchase carried the 1-0 lead into the halftime and then added an insurance goal early in the second half – the first collegiate career goal for midfielder
Brianna Pirozzi (SO/Staten Island, NY). She was assisted by
Rebecca Rojas (SO/New Hyde Park, NY).
In the shutout,
Amber Yarter (SO/Albany, NY) recorded six saves and earned the win.
Purchase is now 3-5 overall, including 2-1 in Skyline Conference play. The loss dropped the Gryphons to 3-4-1 on the fall, and 2-2 in league play.
