Old Westbury, Purchase Play to Draw

Purchase, NY (Sept. 30, 2017) – Ninety minutes of soccer was not enough Saturday at Purchase College.

Visiting SUNY College at Old Westbury and the host Panthers battled their rivals – also the Panthers – for 110 minutes until the two capped a memorable afternoon in a 1-1 draw.

OW struck first in the opening half. Jorey Garcia netted his fourth goal of the fall on an assist from Alexander Routledge. Routledge passed it into the box, where Garcia shot it into the lower right corner for a 1-0 lead (18:45).

But Purchase answered back.

Rob Cal (JR/Port Jervis, NY) responded with his fourth of the season. It was assisted by midfielder Yianni Amvrosiatos (JR/Warwick, NY), who passed the ball into the top six for Cal. The veteran, clutch scorer then turned the pass into a shot into the upper left corner, tying the game at 1-1 (28:44).

The physical contest remained that why into the half.

The visitors led the shot 10-4 at the break and then 20-10 following regulation. The two teams clamped down defensively and put on a display.

Panther rookie keeper Jordan Meade (FR/Olivebridge, NY) was masterful, turning away three key shots, and in the process making three highlight reel plays. He finished the day with nine saves.

The first OT didn't produce a winner, nor did the second, despite a combined 10 shots. Meade made four saves in the first OT and the Purchase defense continued their outstanding play, sealing the stalemate.

Defenders Anthony Iurillo (SR/Whitestone, NY), Joseph Iurillo (FR/Whitestone, NY) and midfielders Kayode Tyler (SR/Nyack, NY) and Favian Reyes (SO/Port Chester, NY) sparked the defense. Reserve Joel Viveros (SR/Valhalla, NY) also made an impact off the bench.

Purchase is now 2-0-1 in conference play. OW is 1-0-1 in the league.
