Purchase, NY
(Sept. 8, 2017) – The Purchase College men's soccer team earned its first win of the season Friday afternoon on campus.
The Panthers got rolling early, scoring three times in the opening 45 minutes on their way to a 3-0 victory over the City College of New York. In the process, Purchase improved to 1-3, while dropping a tough CCNY squad to 0-3, as both clubs have started with a rigorous non-conference schedule to kick start the year.
Purchase broke through off the foot of midfielder
Yianni Amvrosiatos (JR/Warwick, NY). On the loose ball, the strike was assisted by
Eslam Ellisy (FR/Nyack, NY). For Amvrosiatos, the score is his second of the fall, and it proved an immediate spark.
The Panthers kept pace with speedy CCNY and tallied their second score of the half from standout newcomer
Kayode Tyler (SR/Nyack, NY). On a breakaway, Tyler flashed his speed and slammed a laser past CCNY netminder Marcus De Pompeis for the 2-0 lead. For Tyler, it's his first career goal as a Panther.
The two timely scores from Amvrosiatos and Tyler paved the way for a solid first half, where Purchase held advantages in shots and corners.
Before the break, the Panthers padded their lead on a goal from
Aidan Leavens (JR/Whitestone, NY). Leavens, who like Tyler, netted his first of the season, missed on an easy attempt in front of the net moments before. He then blasted a shot wide before finding the back of the net on his third attempt over a few minutes of action. The goal electrified the bench and handed the hosts a dynamic three goal advantage heading into halftime.
In the second half, CCNY was once again stymied by the Purchase defense. The Beavers were limited in their opportunities. In fact, the best of the period came on a free kick following a Purchase yellow card.
The Panthers nearly increased their score to 4-0 on a just missed penalty kick with a little over two minutes to play.
Nonetheless, Purchase outshot CCNY 16-9 for the game, including 11-0 in the first half. Purchase also produced 10 corner kicks and limited their opponents to one for the game.
In addition to the goal scorers,
Thomas Browne (FR/Carle Place, NY),
Stephen Gueye (SO/Eastchester, NY),
Liam Nethercott (SR/Amenia, NY),
Favian Reyes (SO/Port Chester, NY) and
Joseph Iurillo (FR/Whitestone, NY) played well.
Backed by a strong defensive effort up front, Purchase Goalkeeper
Jade Aubertin (SO/Brooklyn, NY) earned the win between the pipes. Backup
Jordan Meade (FR/Olivebridge, NY) also saw time, playing the entire second half. He finished with two saves.
