(Oct. 17, 2018) – No. 1 Purchase College is headed to the women's tennis Skyline Conference Championship after a 5-1 victory over No. 4 Mount Saint Mary at home on Wednesday.
The 2018 Panthers stay undefeated against Skyline opponents after finishing the regular season with a 6-0 league record.
Purchase opened up the scoring with wins at second and third doubles. Senior
Nadia Shadi (New York, NY) and freshman
Alivia Cagliano (Mastic Beach, NY) were first to finish. The two downed Jessalyn Goetz and Emily Quinn 8-1 in the No. 3 spot, while senior
Abigail Cuddy (Mount Kisco, NY) and sophomore
Raquelle DeCicco (Kingston, NY) recorded an 8-2 win at second singles.
The Knights capped doubles play with an 8-4 decision at the top flight as MSMC's Michelle Carnovale and Victoria Clay battled PC freshmen
Bianca Harris (Montgomery, NY) and
Grace Bradshaw (Ossining, NY).
Purchase led 2-1 and kept the momentum going in singles action. The No. 4 position was first to finish. Cagliano netted a 6-4, 6-0 decision over Miyanna Vernon, followed by DeCicco's 6-0, 6-0 sweep over Antonietta Capone at third singles.
Up 4-1, Purchase needed just one more point to secure the semifinal win— and Harris was the Panther up for the task. The standout rookie downed Clay 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot and put the Panthers on course for this Saturday's Skyline Championship match.
No. 1 Purchase will play host to the winner of tonight's No. 3 Farmingdale State at No. 2 St. Joseph's (L.I.) semifinal match.
