(Oct. 18, 2018) – Sarah Lawrence held on to an early lead to defeat Purchase College 2-1 in a Skyline Conference women's soccer matchup Thursday evening.
The Gryphons (6-6, 4-3 SKY) got up on the board in the opening minutes on a far-post shot taken by Tiffany McBrayer.
Gaia Dennison pushed the home team's lead to 2-0 with a goal at 12:22. Teammate Kiley Ritter was awarded the assist on the play.
Purchase (2-10, 1-6 SKY) had three attempts in the opening 45 minutes but was shut down by SLC keeper Madison Mertsch each time.
Eventually the Panthers' efforts were rewarded. Sophomore forward
Allie Scarpa (Vineland, NJ) connected on a corner kick taken by teammate
Brittany Esposito (SR/Flushing, NY) in the 54th minute. The goal would be the last of the game as Sarah Lawrence collected the 2-1 Skyline victory at the sound of the final whistle.
The Gryphons held an 18-8 (7-6 on net) edge in shots. Both sides totaled five corner kicks.
In net for Purchase, junior
Amber Yarter (Albany, NY) recorded four saves. Mertsch totaled three for SLC and picked up her fifth win of the season.
The Panthers take to the road again this Saturday with a Skyline contest at Maritime College starting at noon.
