Jones Drops 31 as Purchase Earns Second Conference Victory

Panthers Outlast Maccabees, 74-71

Purchase, NY (Dec. 6, 2018) – Maintaining a three-point lead with 11 seconds to go, the Purchase College women's basketball team shut down a Yeshiva attempt to tie the game, securing the 74-71 victory over the visiting Maccabees Thursday night.

Purchase (4-3, 2-1 SKY) opened the game with back-to-back layups from senior guard Amber Jones (Bronx, NY) and sophomore guard Dejeana Peoples (New York, NY) to take a 4-0 lead.

Yeshiva (5-4, 3-3 SKY) answered with four points of its own. The Maccabees continued to connect, outshooting the home team 22-12 to finish the opening quarter with a 26-15 advantage.

The Panthers slowly chipped away at Yeshiva's lead in the second stanza. With 3:23 left on the clock, the home team tied the game at 33 on a three-pointer from freshman forward Shadai Plowden (Yonkers, NY).  The lead would change two more times in the minutes to follow before Plowden connected on a free tie the game 35-35 at halftime.

The Purchase offense saw its best shooting after the break. The Panthers went 8-of-18 from the field (44.4%) and 4-for-5 from beyond the arc (80%) in the third quarter. Jones led the charge with 13 points over the 10 minutes of play.

A Yeshiva rally in the final stanza tied the game at 64 with just under six minutes left in regulation time. Three unanswered points on layups from senior guard Nyasia Harris (South Fallsburg, NY), Jones and Plowden gave the Panthers the three-point lead they would carry through the final buzzer.

Purchase looks to continue its winning ways this weekend with a Skyline game at league rival Farmingdale State. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
