Purchase Baseball Sweeps Yeshiva

Purchase, NY (Mar. 20, 2018) – Purchase College baseball compiled 28-1 and 14-2 wins in its Skyline Conference opener Tuesday evening against the Yeshiva Maccabees.

With the wins, Purchase advances to 10-3 overall and 2-0 in the league. Yeshiva slides to 0-8, 0-6 in defeat.

Game 1: Purchase 28, Yeshiva 1
Rookie standout Matthew Mulligan (FR/Bellport, NY) knocked in the first run for Purchase with a single to left field and then came around to score on a Patrick Wallace (SO/Manorville, NY) single to right in the top of the first inning.

In the second inning, Zack Dicanio (FR/Mastic Beach, NY) led off with a single, stole second, and scored three batters later on a sacrifice fly to right field. Later in the inning, a Dylan Flynn (FR/Smithtown, NY) 2-RBI triple pushed Matthew Nilsen (FR/Bellmore, NY) and Nick Tuozzola (JR/Milford, CT) across for a 5-0 lead. Purchase knocked in the final run of the inning on a Brian Cunningham (JR/Westbury, NY) sacrifice fly to right field.

Tuozzola homered inside the park in the top of the third, scoring two more runs for Purchase. The Panthers added another to take a 9-0 lead heading into the fourth inning.

The Panther offense ignited the rest of the way, scoring a combined 19 runs over the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

Yeshiva's lone run came in the bottom of the sixth, thanks to an RBI double by senior first baseman Chaim Nosson Rosenberg, which scored sophomore center fielder David Hanelin from second.

Jonathon Deacon (SR/Lindenhurst, NY) (4-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Panthers, pitching five shutout innings. Neal Koch (JR/New City, NY) went two innings of relief.

Game 2: Purchase 14, Yeshiva 2
Purchase took a 4-0 lead to start before Yeshiva tallied a run on a hit-by-pitch in the bottom of the second.

In the top of the third, Dicanio and Nilsen each batted in a run and Dicanio scored on a Yeshiva passed ball to bring the Panther lead to 7-1.

In the fourth, Yeshiva's Josh Fogel picked up his second RBI of the game with a groundout to second base, scoring Aryeh Salovey and narrowing the Panthers' lead to 7-2.

After scoreless fifth and sixth innings for both teams, Purchase drove home seven runs in the top of the seventh to settle the score and secure the Skyline sweep.

Cunningham (3-0) fanned four batters and scattered three hits in five innings of work to record the Panthers' win.  Reliever Cody Hennequin (FR/Milford, CT) finished the final two innings with an impressive five strikeouts and no-hit ball.

Purchase is back in action on Mar. 24 at SUNY Maritime. The Mariners are set to host the Panthers for a Skyline doubleheader starting at 12:30 p.m.
