Purchase, NY
(March 27, 2018) –
Zoe Hines is in the zone.
Fresh off a seven-goal game, Hines (SR/Maplewood, NJ) took it a step further Tuesday night. The tri-captain scored a career-best – and program defining – 10 goals in a resounding 18-17 victory against SUNY Maritime. She also delivered the game-winning score. More on that later.
Hines spoiled Maritime's Skyline Conference opener, and in the process helped the Panthers erase an early 3-0 deficit. Purchase is now a perfect 4-0, including 1-0 in league play.
Hines stayed hot. And so did the Panthers.
Kelly Turtell (SR/Farmingdale, NY) added four strikes, while rookie stars
Maddy Mecca (FR/Oceanside, NY),
Gabriella Castles (FR/Bethpage, NY) and
Casey O'Riordan (FR/Huntington Station, NY) added single goals.
Astrella Dacosta (SO/Croton-on-Hudson, NY) also finished with a goal on the day at Reinhart Field.
Maritime was led by Catherine Pfundstein with six goals on 14 shots, while teammates Krista Deleva and Ciara Murphy had identical stat lines with five goals and two assists apiece.
The Privateers charged out of the gates with three goals as Deleva, Pfundstein and Sara Wright all scored to give Maritime the 3-0 lead. Purchase scored next, but Maritime responded on a goal by Deleva as Murphy picked up the assist. The Panthers scored the next two to pull Purchase back within one before the Privateers got their offense rolling again.
Hines closed the half with two goals and the Panthers trailed 10-9 at the break.
In the second half, Pfundstein got the ball rolling again, but Purchase then evened the game at 11 before making it three-straight goals for its first lead of the game at 12-11.
Maritime evened the score at 12 before Purchase regained the lead at 14-12 with two unanswered goals. Hines scored her 24th and 25th on the plays.
Murphy and Deleva added back-to-back free-position goals to tie the game at 14, before Purchase took the lead once again at 15-14.
The game would be tied again at 16-all.
Purchase wrestled the lead back at 17-16 with a free-position goal by Turtell with 7:38 to go before Maritime tied the game with just over two minutes left off a feed from Deleva.
The Panthers regained possession and scored the game-winning goal with 16 seconds left, as Purchase pulled off the heart-pounding win. Hines, of course, nailed the game winner. She has 27 goals in four games.
Maritime falls to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in conference.
Purchase stays on the road for a non-conference matchup against Albertus Magnus on Thursday afternoon with the opening draw set for 4 p.m. in New Haven, Connecticut.
