Panthers Caged by Marywood

Purchase, NY (Mar. 29, 2018) – The Purchase College baseball team returned to its home diamond on Thursday to host Marywood University in a non-conference doubleheader. The Scranton-based Pacers (7-7) notched wins for both games, defeating the host Panthers (11-9) by scores of 11-3 and 8-5, respectively.

Game 1: Marywood 11, Purchase 3
Marywood lit up the board first with two runs in the top of the first inning. Purchase answered back in the bottom half of the inning with a Matthew Mulligan (FR/Bellport, NY) RBI single to left center field. The Panthers struck again in the second and fifth inning to take a 3-2 lead over the Pacers.

Kevin McDonough recorded a 2-RBI single for Marywood in the top of the sixth inning. The right fielder later came around to score on an Austin Takvor double to right field. The Pacers took a 5-3 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth.

Despite a valiant effort, the Panthers could not regain the lead. Marywood brought in another six runs in the seventh to secure the 11-3 victory.

Marywood closer Trevor Powers (1-0) picked up his first win of 2018 after two innings on the mound. Purchase's Michael Laskowski (FR/Floral Park, NY) (0-2) was tagged with the loss.

Game 2: Marywood 8, Purchase 5
The home team worked hard to keep the game close during its second showing.

Trailing 2-1, the Panthers rallied in the fourth inning. Tighe Jorgenson (FR/Fairfield, CT) got on base by a fielder's choice advancing Mulligan to second base. Mulligan went on to score on a Marywood error. With the bases loaded, Matt Nilsen (FR/Bellmore, NY) stepped to the plate. He walked, advancing the batters, scoring Jorgenson, and forcing a Pacer pitching change.

In the next play, Dylan Flynn (FR/Smithtown, NY) reached on a fielder's choice and scored Zack Dicanio (FR/Mastic Beach, NY). Purchase led 4-2 at the end of the fourth inning.

Starting pitcher Cody Hennequin (FR/Milford, CT) battled in the fifth, walking two runners and allowing a hit to load the bases. Pacer Mitch Clemons came up big with a double, scoring three runs, bringing the score to 5-4 for the visitors. Hennequin ended the inning with batter Austin Takvor watching the third strike go by.

Pitcher Nick Torres (SO/Cornwall, NY) climbed the hill to start the sixth inning and struck out the first batter. Torres walked the second batter who landed safely on first base. Catcher Nick Tuozzola (JR/Milford, CT) threw down the runner at second helping hold the game at 5-4.

The Panthers' solid defense continued in the top of the seventh. Matthew Villalobos (JR/Brooklyn, NY) threw home to relief catcher Jackson Hill (SO/Brooklyn, NY) who tagged the runner out. The next batter for the Pacers slugged it to Flynn at short stop who hurled it to Jorgenson at first base for the third out of the inning, holding the score steady at 5-4 Pacers.

Purchase tied the game in the seventh inning at 5 when Mulligan was pushed across by a Marywood error. Devin Merone (JR/Eastchester, NY) advanced to second after a wild throw to first base. Jorgenson followed with a walk but the two were left stranded on base, bringing the second game into extra innings.

Marywood took advantage of Purchase errors in the top of the ninth and scored three unearned runs to take an 8-5 lead.

Marywood closer Trevor Powers recorded three strikeouts in the bottom of the ninth to lock in the 8-5 victory.

Purchase is back in action at home again tomorrow. The Panthers are set to host John Jay College in a single 9-inning non-conference game starting at 11 a.m.
