Men's Volleyball Splits Opening League Action

Flemington, NJ (Mar. 4, 2018) – Purchase College volleyball opened league action with a split at the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) tri-match on Sunday at the Danzi Center.

Match One: SJC-LI 3, Purchase 0
The host Golden Eagles (11-6, 2-0 Skyline) held the visiting Panthers (2-5, 0-1 Skyline) to single digits in sets one and two, 25-9, 25-8, before completing the shutout with a 25-12 win the third set.

Sophomore Paul Curaro led SJC with seven kills and a .600 hitting percentage. Sophomores Matthew Amberge and Kyle Biggers provided five kills apiece. Senior setter Tyler Jones tossed a match-high 19 assists and sophomore Michael Barfield picked up a match-high seven digs.
 
The Panthers were led by Luke Kubisch (JR/Delmar, NY) with two kills and two digs. Griffin Rapp (SR/Rochester, NY), Christian Colon (FR/Bronx, NY), and Christopher Williams (SR/Valley Stream, NY) all added a kill apiece. Williams also recorded a team-high five digs.

MatchTwo: Purchase 3, Yeshiva 0
After falling to SJC in their opening match, the Panthers rallied to defeat Yeshiva University, 3-0, in game two of the afternoon. Set scores were 25-14, 25-22, and 25-14.

Kubisch and Andreo Otiniano (SO/Mamaroneck, NY) paved the way for Purchase (2-6, 1-1 Skyline) with an impressive eight kills apiece. Williams was a close second with seven kills.

Otiniano smashed a game-best six aces and 17 assists. Thomas Slomka (SO/Orchard Park, NY) tallied five aces, while Rapp chipped in with seven assists and seven digs.

For the Maccabees was junior outside hitter Chaim Aryeh Rubin, who notched six kills, produced just as many digs, and had three blocks. Classmate Amitai Miller anchored the defense with eight digs, while freshman setter Ariel Boutehsaz produced six digs, six assists, two service aces, and one block.

Purchase heads to the Pratt Institute on Thursday (March 8) for a non-conference match starting at 7 p.m.
