Hunter Slips Past Purchase

Purchase, NY (April 12, 2018) – Hunter College posted a non-conference doubleheader sweep of the Panthers today at Purchase.

The Hawks utilized five errors in game one en route to a 4-1 win, and then rallied for a 6-4 final in game two.

Hunter (10-10) scored single runs in the first, second, fourth and fifth before Purchase scratched across a solo run in the seventh. That came on a Victoria Capone-Froio (SR/Yonkers, NY) triple and RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Antonina Fiore (SR/Mount Sinai, NY).

The visitors didn't do much damage offensively, collecting only four hits against hard luck-loser Kelly Agostini (FR/Centereach, NY). The Panther ace pitched well in the loss, allowing only one earned run in the opener.

Hunter's first three runs were all unearned.

In game two, Purchase fell behind 2-0, but answered right back with three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Daniella Edelson (JR/Hopewell Junction, NY) singled in the first run. Shortly after, Capone-Froio and Edelson completed a nifty double steal to tie the game, with Capone-Froio swiping home. Shawna Smith (FR/Kingston, NY) followed and smashed a double, plating Edelson from second for the lead.

But Hunter tied the game in the fourth and added three runs in the sixth for the come-from-behind victory.

Like in the opener, Purchase showed resilience late, scoring a run in the sixth. Edelson's sacrifice fly scored Capone-Froio, who reached on a bunt single to open the inning. Capone-Froio stole second and was moved over to third on a grounder before coming home on the fly out.

The Panthers managed a base runner in the seventh, but couldn't keep the momentum going.

In the loss, Purchase is now 3-9. The Panthers were led by Edelson and her two RBI. Capone-Froio collected two of the team's seven hits in game two.

Hunter's Nicole Guzzone earned the game-two victory.  Leanna Donahue won game one for the visitors. In the finale, the Hawks got three of their nine hits from Samantha Molloy, while Annalise McClellan and Allyson Bricker finished with two RBI apiece.
