Purchase, NY
(Apr. 13, 2018) – Purchase softball made short order of Yeshiva University at home Friday, sweeping the Maccabees in a pair of five-inning games by the count of 14-5 and 13-5.
Freshman
Kelly Agostini (Centereach, NY) tossed complete-game victories for the Panthers, earning her second and third wins of the season, respectively.
Game 1: Purchase 14, Yeshiva 5
Yeshiva got out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning but the Maccabees surrendered seven unanswered runs over the next two innings before eventually falling to the Panthers in five innings.
Junior
Kelly Hayes (Staten Island, NY) drove in a pair of Purchase runs with a 2-RBI double down the left field line in the bottom of the first and came around to even the score on a
Antonina Fiore (SR/Mount Sinai, NY) sacrifice fly to center field. A
Kaitlyn Antonelli (FR/Yonkers, NY) game-winning RBI double to right center pushed Agostini across for a 3-2 Purchase lead.
Carolina De Los Santos (FR/Brooklyn, NY) added the final Panther run of the inning with a RBI ground out that scored
Victoria Capone-Froio (SR/Yonkers, NY).
Hayes and Capone-Froio combined for another two runs in the bottom of the second as the home team took a 7-3 lead.
Yeshiva scored an unearned run in the top of the third but the Panther offense answered back with an impressive seven runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Purchase gave up only one run in the fifth to secure the 14-5 victory.
Agostini scattered seven hits and two walks to record the victory for the Panthers. Yeshiva's Samantha Cohen (1-7) was tagged with the loss.
Game 2: Purchase 13, Yeshiva 5
Yeshiva once again broke open the scoring in the first inning but Maccabee defense was no match for the hot-hitting Panther offense. Purchase batted in four runs in the bottom of the first to take a 4-2 lead. Hayes got things going with a RBI double and freshman
Shawna Smith (Kingston, NY) tied the game at two with a RBI single up the middle. Smith then stole second and scored the winning run on a Maccabee error.
Purchase held the lead for the remainder of the game, scattering runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings, respectively. Junior
Lisa Kentris (Latham, NY) highlighted the run with a RBI triple and steal at home plate in the bottom of the fifth inning. A Fiore RBI single to center field in the same inning put the Panthers ahead by eight and secured the mercy-rule victory.
Returning for her fourth-consecutive complete-game appearance on the mound for PC was Agostini. The rookie ace (3-6) allowed just four hits while striking out four over 4.2 innings of work.
Up next, Purchase is set to travel to Farmingdale this Sunday for a Skyline doubleheader starting at noon.
