Purchase, NY
(April 13, 2018) – A strong start for both Purchase and Farmingdale State led to a series of back-and-forth goals early, but the Rams put together a first-half spurt that by game's end was too much for the Panthers to overcome.
The Rams posted an eventual 15-8 conference win to improve to 2-1 in Skyline play. The loss drops Purchase to 2-2 in conference.
The matchup was tied at 1-1 and 3-3 through the first 15 minutes of play. However, FSC answered with four straight and six of the next seven goals scored to take a 9-4 advantage.
The visitors went into halftime up 10-5, and then outscored Purchase 8-3 over the final 30 minutes, despite a much more competitive showing on the field than the final score.
FSC was paced by Sam Shelton and her four goals. Nicola Ingrassia, Deanna Iannotta, Jessica Spina and Julia Tuohy also recorded two goals apiece. Three others had single strikes.
Purchase was led offensively by
Zoe Hines (SR/Maplewood, NJ), who tied the game at 1-1 and later gave the Panthers a 3-2 lead.
Following an FSC score, Hines then tied it at 3-all, scoring her 44th of the season midway through the period.
Hines' final goal of the day came halfway through the second. She now has 45 for the spring.
Rookie standout
Gabriella Castles (FR/Bethpage, NY) added two goals, while fellow newcomer
Maddy Mecca (FR/Oceanside, NY) tallied one. Senior tri-captain
Kelly Turtell (SR/Farmingdale, NY) had the other goal for Purchase.
Shelton, Spina and Tuohy finished with a team-best four points apiece for the Rams.
Hines led all players with six points in the loss. Castles added three ground balls, three caused turnovers and two draw controls in a well-rounded effort.
The Panthers will look to regroup next Wednesday night, when they welcome Old Westbury to Purchase for a 7 p.m. Skyline Conference matchup.
