Purchase, NY
(April 24, 2018) – Tuesday night marked the final regular season home game for the 2018 women's lacrosse seniors.
It was also an evening where the Panthers were able to give back locally, welcoming Greenwich Youth Lacrosse (GYL) for a pregame clinic (pictured above). The GYL is the founding lacrosse program to the town of Greenwich, CT, and is the only non profit lacrosse organization in Greenwich serving kindergarten through 8th grade boys and girls since 1972.
The youth were treated to a high-scoring matchup between Purchase and Gwynedd Mercy University. The visiting Griffins pulled out the slugfest, winning 21-13.
The Panthers jumped on the board first behind standout rookie
Gabriella Castles (FR/Bethpage, NY), but Gwynedd Mercy answered back to tie the game and then later take a 2-1 lead. It would be tied again at 3-3 and 4-4 before three straight goals by the Griffins.
The hosts would climb back within one shortly later, trailing 9-8, but the visitors would take an 11-8 advantage into halftime, fueled by another spurt.
In the second half, the Griffins went on to outscore Purchase 10-5 to seal the win.
Gwynedd Mercy's Victoria Braeunle and Samantha Brown headlined the offensive attack, scoring seven and six goals, respectively.
The Panthers were paced by
Kelly Turtell (SR/Farmingdale, NY) and her six strikes. Rookies Castles and
Maddy Mecca (FR/Oceanside, NY) added three apiece, while
Astrella Dacosta (SO/Croton-on-Hudson, NY) accounted for the other goal.
