(Sept. 15, 2018) – The Purchase women's tennis team suffered a tough 5-4 loss in the 2018 season-opener to Brooklyn College Saturday afternoon at Roosevelt Courts.
The Panthers (1-0) trailed Brooklyn 2-1 after doubles play. The No. 3 duo of senior
Nadia Shadi (New York, NY) and
freshman Alivia Cagliano (Mastic Beach, NY) picked up the only doubles win for PC with an 8-1 victory over Shannel Johnson and Michelle Bernstein.
In singles competition, Brooklyn (2-0) advanced its lead to 3-1 with a win at the No. 3 position. BC's Tamila Latif-Zade defeated the 2018 Skyline Conference Rookie of the Year
Raquelle DeCicco (SO/Kingston, NY) by a score of 6-1, 6-0.
First and second singles were next in line to finish. Ievgeniia Kostenko battled to a 6-3, 6-2 win over Panther rookie
Bianca Harris (FR/Montgomery, NY) at the No. 1 spot, and Rosa Aksanov secured the match victory for Brooklyn with a win at No. 2 singles. Aksanov defeated PC newcomer
Grace Bradshaw (FR/Ossining, NY) 6-0, 6-1 for Brooklyn's fifth and final point.
Despite the match decision, Purchase went on to record wins for the final three singles matches. Cagliano and seniors
Abigail Cuddy (Mount Kisco, NY) and
Megan Fox (Manhasset, NY) notched PC victories at fourth, fifth and sixth singles, respectively. Cagliano, in her collegiate debut Saturday, was the only Panther to earn wins at both singles and doubles play.
The Panthers return to action this Tuesday (Sept. 18) for a non-conference match against Baruch College at Alley Pond Tennis Center. Start time is 3:30 p.m.
