(Sept. 21, 2018) – SUNY Delhi managed to escape Purchase with a 3-1 victory Friday night.
The visiting Broncos (6-3) fended off the Panthers in a very competitive match that was highlighted by long rallies and both teams holding serve for stretches. Delhi prevailed 25-21, 25-16, 21-25, 25-23, outlasting several furious Purchase (1-4) rallies.
Both teams see-sawed through the opening set, with the Panthers coming back to tie it early, but Delhi put together one final push to close the set. The visitors were stronger in the second, but started to show some vulnerability in the third set, where the Panthers captured a four-point win. Purchase was in position to force the decisive fifth set late, but the Broncos narrowly edged the hosts in closing out the set and match by two points.
Delhi was paced offensively by Witchney Clersainvil (10 kills), Kristen Maslanka (9) and Caitlyn Curcurito (9). Erica Prindle added 24 assists and three aces. Maslanka led the effort defensively with 22 digs.
The Panthers received a match-high 12 kills from
Sommer Code (FR/Bronx, NY), 10 from
Grace Ann Gropp (FR/Webster, NY) and a match-high 28 assists from
Karina Medina (FR/Brooklyn, NY).
Skyla Schoppmeyer (FR/Oakdale, NY) turned in a nice effort on defense with 17 digs. Code recorded a double-double in defeat, notching 15 digs to go along with her 12 kills.
