(Sept. 26, 2018) – Purchase tennis followed a resounding victory over the Pratt Institute at home by sweeping Skyline Conference opponent St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) on the road Wednesday night.
The Panthers won their third straight match, downing the Bears 9-0 to improve to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
The Bears (1-4, 1-1 SKY) were no match for Purchase Wednesday. At third doubles,
Nadia Shadi (SR/New York, NY) and
Raquelle DeCicco (SO/Kingston, NY) shutout their SJC opponents, 8-0. The easy win set the tone early. The Panthers continued their hot play in doubles behind No. 2 combo
Grace Bradshaw (FR/Ossining, NY) and
Alivia Cagliano (FR/Mastic Beach, NY), who recorded an 8-1 victory. The duo soundly defeated Valentina Velez and Daniella Alva.
The last of the doubles matches to finish was at top seed. Standout veteran
Abigail Cuddy (SR/Mount Kisco, NY) and star rookie
Bianca Harris (FR/Montgomery, NY) teamed for an 8-5 win at No. 1 spot, coasting by the combination of Denise Trerotola and Ashleigh Hartwig.
In singles action, Shadi opened with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Jennifer Garcia at the No. 5 spot.
Angela Fiedler (FR/Middletown, NY) secured the win for Purchase with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Mariela Picon at sixth singles. Bradshaw went on to record a 6-0, 6-0 shutout at the No. 3 spot, while DeCicco and Cuddy netted 6-0, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-2 wins at second and fourth singles, respectively.
In a 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (11-9) first singles performance, Harris proved victorious over Trerotola to compete the sweep.
The Panthers return home Friday for a 4 p.m. non-conference start against Manhattanville College.
