(Sept. 29, 2018) – Purchase women's volleyball played host to non-conference opponents Lehman College and Pratt Institute for a tri-match on Saturday.
Despite an impressive showing, the Panthers fell short in both matches, dropping the opener to Lehman in five sets 3-2 (25-16, 25-12, 25-21, 25-22,15-13) and falling 3-1 (25-20, 25-19, 27-25, 25-12) to Pratt in game two.
Game 1: Lehman 3, Purchase 2
A deciding fifth set victory for Lehman sealed a 3-2 win over Purchase in match one.
The Panthers came out strong and swept the first two sets with scores of 25-16 and 25-12. Lehman then came back to tie after a close third and fourth set with final scores of 25-21 and 25-22.
The Lightning then notched the victory over Purchase in a hard fought fifth set with a final score of 15-13.
Strong efforts from Lehman's Eriadna Vasquez including 36 total attacks and 17 digs fueled the defeat.
Despite the loss, underclassmen stood out as rookie ace
Sommer Code (FR/Bronx, NY) lead the team with a game high 38 total attacks and 16 kills. Fellow newcomers
Gia Gwin (FR/Yonkers, NY) trailed behind with 24 total attacks, and
Karina Medina (FR/Brooklyn, NY) contributed an impressive 34 assists.
Game 2: Pratt 3, Purchase 1
Bouncing back from a first set loss, Pratt soared past Purchase and pulled off a 3-1 victory.
The Panthers clinched the first set win with a close score of 25-20. The second and third sets proved to be equally competitive as the Cannoneers fired back with a 25-19 and 27-25.
Pratt ended the match in the fourth set with a final score of 25-12.
Pratt's middle hitter Shannon Corr earned the game high 47 total attacks. Ivana Santascoy added 12 digs for the Cannoneers.
Sommers lead the Panthers with 39 total attacks and 13 kills.
Grace Ann Gropp (FR/Webster, NY) contributed 6 kills and
Joetta Francis (JR/New York, NY) added two blocks to boost the Panthers on defense.
The Panthers will remain home for their Skyline Conference opener on Wednesday Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. against Maritime College.
