Men's Soccer Falls to USMMA in Skyline Scrap

PURCHASE, NY - The Purchase College men's soccer team was defeated at home Tuesday night, falling to the Mariners of U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in a Skyline Conference match, 4-0.

The loss was the first conference defeat of the year for the Panthers, as they now sit at 3-1 in the Skyline and 5-3-1 overall. Meanwhile, USMMA moved into first place in the conference, as the victory pushed them to 4-0 in the league and 7-3 overall.

The Mariners struck early on the night, netting the winner in the 14th minute. Alex Madonna (SR/Gibsonia, PA) stroked in a perfect shot from the top of the penalty box, giving Panther goalkeeper Mario Olmedo (FR/East Elmhurst, NY) no chance at a save.

13 minutes later, USMMA doubled its advantage, as Nick Roros (SR/Northport, NY) converted his second shot attempt in the box, after having his initial chance blocked by a Purchase defender. Olmedo nearly got to the second shot, but Roros found the top right corner of goal, leaving it just out of reach.

In the 52nd minute, the Mariners added a third goal to pad their lead, but that didn't stop the Panthers from competing the rest of the way.

Purchase actually had a goal disallowed in the 62nd minute, as the assistant referee put his flag up for offsides. The tough luck continued for Purchase throughout, as Christian Ishoo (SO/Tarrytown, NY) hit the right post in the 83th minute, only to see USMMA add a final goal in the 89th minute off a corner.

On the night, the Mariners outshot the Panthers, 20-3. Olmedo finished with five saves for the Panthers in the effort.

Purchase will look to get back on track in a couple of days at Yeshiva University. That game is set for October 3rd at 7:30 pm in Yonkers, NY. You can follow it here.
