PURCHASE, NY – The SUNY College at Old Westbury slipped past Purchase Monday night, taking the Skyline Conference matchup, 3-0 (25-13, 26-24, 25-10).
Old Westbury (6-7, 2-5 SKY) took a 9-0 lead in the opening set behind the strong serving of Kyraleigh Zinnel. The visiting Panthers would continue with the momentum, finishing the set with a combined 15 kills and .312 hitting percentage.
The second set produced a much stronger showing from Purchase (4-13, 1-6 SKY). The hosts opened with a 3-0 run and held the advantage until a kill by Joelle Desrosiers pushed Old Westbury out in front, 16-15, for the first time in the set.
Trailing 18-17, Purchase rallied with five unanswered points to take back the lead, 21-18. The final plays resulted in two more ties, including one at 24-24 on an Old Westbury attacking error. As quickly as Purchase's momentum sparked, it also faded as the home team surrendered the set-point on a ball handling error. Old Westbury took the win in set two, 26-24.
Unable to snap the loss of set two, Purchase struggled to find its groove in the third set. Old Westbury, however, continued to ignite and combined for 10 kills on 30 attempts with just three errors (.233). The visitors also notched five aces en route to the 25-10 set victory.
Freshman outside hitter
Pamella Gonzalez (Bronx, NY) paced Purchase with three kills, eight digs and two assists. Sophomore setter
Skyla Schoppmeyer (Oakdale, NY) recorded seven assists, while senior co-captain and libero
Isis Gonzalez (Brooklyn, NY) totaled 13 digs and two assists.
Old Westbury's Daesha Garrison led all scorers with 12 kills and a notable four blocks (three solo). Desrosiers recorded a match-best .333 hitting percentage after netting 10 kills on 21 attempts with just three errors. She also notched a team-best nine digs.
The Panthers will look to get back on track this Thursday at home. Purchase is set to play host to the College of Mount Saint Vincent at 7 p.m.
