PURCHASE, NY – The Purchase College women's soccer team scored early and often to defeat the Privateers of Maritime College, 5-2, on Senior Day Saturday afternoon.
The Panthers are now 7-4 overall and an even .500 at 3-3 in Skyline Conference play. In defeat, the visiting Privateers drop to 4-9 overall and 0-6 in the league.
Purchase wasted no time getting on the board, scoring two goals in the opening 18 minutes. Sophomore midfielder
Olivia DeBonis (Los Angeles, CA) made her collegiate scoring debut with the game-winner at 14:36. With the assist from teammate
Rebecca Colgan (SO/Valley Stream, NY), the standout rookie slipped a ground shot past Maritime's starting keeper MacKenzie Fabiani to break the scoring ice.
Colgan was next to connect for Purchase, scoring at 18:06 off a long service from senior defender Astrella DaCosta (Croton-on-Hudson, NY). Colgan ripped a shot from the top of the 18-yard box to the left upper 90 to push Purchase's lead to 2-0.
Less than four minutes later, freshman defender
Michelle Gomez (Oceanside, NY) delivered a beautiful corner kick to the feet of senior co-captain and midfielder
Brett Robison (Franklin Square, NY). Robison hit a high shot to the upper left corner to gave PC a comfortable 3-0 advantage.
The Panthers would control the game for the remainder of the first half, limiting Maritime to just two shots on target.
Purchase picked up where it left off following the break, scoring back-to-back goals at 46:15 and 50:45, respectively. Colgan netted the first and her 20th of the season with an unassisted shot that bounced off the cross bar and into the back of the net.
Senior tri-captain and forward
Ashley Blom was next in line after she scored off the double-assist effort of Robison and
Madeline Mecca (JR/Oceanside, NY).
Trailing 5-0, Maritime would score twice to attempt a comeback. Sara Wright broke the Privateer scoring ice with a 1v1 to goal at 51:54. Wright later recorded the assist on teammate Brianne Etienne's goal in the 56th minute. Despite their efforts, the Privateers were unable to close the gap, affording Purchase the 5-2 victory.
