PURCHASE, NY – A fast start for Purchase College loomed large in its 4-3 Skyline Conference victory over St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) Wednesday night. Standout sophomore
Rebecca Colgan fueled the win with a career-best four goals in a single game.
With the gain, Purchase moves to 5-3 overall and an even .500 (2-2) in the Skyline. In defeat, the visiting Bears drop to 6-5 overall and 1-2 in the league.
Colgan (Valley Stream, NY) broke the scoring ice in the contest's 41st minute of play. Senior tri-captain
Brett Robison (Franklin Square, NY) sent a perfectly placed through ball to the feet of Colgan, who turned and ripped a shot from the top of the 18-yard box.
Colgan kept her foot on the gas and on the ball because less than a minute later, she notched an unassisted goal after slipping one past the approaching SJC goalkeeper, through the legs of the last defender, and into the back of the net.
At the half, Purchase led 2-0 with a 9-5 advantage in shots.
SJC's Anisah Molic got the visiting team up on the board at 57:29 but Purchase fired back minutes later with an unassisted goal from Colgan.
With less than 10 minutes remaining and a hat trick already under her belt, Colgan went for the haul.
Trailing 4-1, the Bears began to claw back. Deserae Sequeira scored off a corner kick taken by Christina DiBartolo to make it 4-2. Minutes later, SJC was awarded a penalty kick and Sequeira's on-point shot put the Bears within one goal of the Panther lead.
Both teams recorded shots in the final minute of play. Thanks to the defensive block by Purchase sophomore
Brianny Marin (Port Chester, NY), SJC's attempt was denied and the 4-3 Purchase victory was secured.
Making her season-debut in goal for Purchase, senior tri-captain
Ashley Blom (Bethpage, NY) recorded five saves in the victory.
St. Joe's netminder Reem Shaban tallied seven saves in defeat.
Sitting at No. 6 in Skyline standings, the Panthers put league play on pause until Oct. 12. Up next, the team will face the City College of New York Beavers for a non-conference matchup on Oct. 8 at 7 p.m.
