Baruch Tops Purchase, 3-0

PURCHASE, NY – The Purchase women's volleyball team dropped a non-conference home match to the Bearcats of Baruch College Thursday night. The visitors hit .261 as a team to record a 25-7, 25-17, 25-12 win.

Baruch (10-4) jumped out on top quickly, earning a set advantage thanks to some solid attacking from Stella Chung. The Bearcat junior tallied five kills on seven attempts (.571). Sanaa Hadjeb chipped in with nine assists and three service aces.

The Bearcats kept their hot hitting going in the second set, netting 14 kills on 41 swings. Anita Sengara led the charge with five kills on five attempts without a single error.  

Baruch was able to capture the win in the third set, posting 10 kills in the period, including four by Chung.

Chung led the Bearcats for the night with 12 total kills, needing only 20 swings and hitting .500 for the match. Hadjeb aided the effort with an impressive eight service aces.

Purchase (3-9) struggled to recover from the opening set. The Panthers hit .059 as a team, committing 12 attacking errors and 15 reception errors.

Freshman outside hitter Pamella Gonzalez (Bronx, NY) led the Panther offense with six kills (.417) while also collecting three digs. Sophomore outside hitter Gia Gwin (Yonkers, NY) recorded five kills and sophomore setter Skyla Schoppmeyer (Oakdale, NY) collected 12 assists in the loss.

Up next, the Panthers travel to Brooklyn, N.Y. for a non-conference tri-match hosted by the Pratt Institute on Saturday. Purchase will open the day with an 11 a.m. match against the host Cannoneers.
