JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Purchase College men's soccer team was defeated at New Jersey City University Wednesday afternoon, falling in the non-conference match, 3-0.
With the result, the Panthers are now 6-5-1 overall, while the Gothic Knights of NJCU improved to 11-4 on the season.Â
Much like the contest on
Monday night, rainy conditions heavily impacted the game for both sides. This was especially true for Purchase in the 16th minute, as the team had a wonderful choice go awry.
After the Panthers won the ball off a turnover, a pass was sent in to
Andrew Dubron (FR/Centereach, NY) down the left side of field. As he raced down toward goal, he lined up a wonderful cross for a streaking and completely unmarked,
Brandon Balcaceres (FR/Farmingdale, NY).
The pass was perfectly timed for Balcaceres, but as the freshman attempted to slow down and swing at a shot, his other foot slid out from under him and he fell to the ground. Quickly, the Gothic Knights cleared the ball away, leaving Balcaceres noticeably frustrated by the missed opportunity.Â
From there, NJCUÂ collected itself on defense and limited the quality chances Purchase had the rest of the way, all the while getting its own offense going.
In the 26th minute, Samuel Ansah (SO/East Orange, NJ) got the Gothic Knights on the board, after he received a pass at the top of the 18-yard box and was able to lift it over a charging
Mario Olmedo (FR/East Elmhurst, NY) for the opening goal.Â
Four minutes later, NJCU doubled its lead on an individual effort by Edric De Paula (SO/Blairstown, NJ). De Paula scored after making a long run and getting past a couple of Panthers defenders, before slotting the ball into the bottom left corner.Â
The score remained 2-0 until the 71st minute, when the hosts added one final goal to cap the scoring on the day. Overall, NJCU outshot Purchase 21-13 on total shots, while each side finished with eights shots on goal apiece in the effort.Â
Olmedo tallied five saves for Purchase, while Aldahir Cazun (JR/Jersey City, NJ) recorded eight saves in the win.
Up next for the Panthers is a return to Skyline Conference action, as the team travels down the road to take on Manhattanville College on October 12th. That match is set to begin at 1 p.m. and you can follow it here.Â
