Men's Volleyball Falls at John Jay

New York, NY (Feb. 14, 2019) – The Purchase College men's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 non-conference match to John Jay Thursday evening.  With a set scores of 25-12, 25-22 and 25-16, the Bloodhounds improved to 5-4 overall while the Panthers drop to 2-6 on the season. 
 
John Jay took a 5-0 lead in the opening set behind the strong serving of Michael Chabla. Later in the set, already down 16-9, John Jay would rattle off another five points and would force the Panthers to call a timeout. John Jay would continue with the momentum scoring another three points after the timeout and ultimately won the set 25-12.
 
The second set produced a much stronger showing from the Panthers. Set two was back-and-forth early with an astounding 12 ties, leaving the game tied at 13 apiece. John Jay would gain a bit of momentum and would eventually take the lead 18-14. Purchase would respond by winning four out of the next five points, which included two kills by Luke Kubisch (SR/Delmar, NY). Two consecutive errors by Purchase would give John Jay a 21-18 lead, and after a string of errors by both teams, the Bloodhounds would come out on top, winning the set 25-22.
 
The third set saw John Jay go on two 4-point runs early which resulted in a John Jay lead 12-5. Purchase responded well, scoring the next four points thanks to a kill by Matthew Waterhouse (FR/Massapequa Park, NY), followed up by three consecutive errors by the Bloodhounds, placing the score at 12-9. This is the closest the score would stand for the remainder of the set, as John Jay would hold Purchase off the rest of the set, winning 25-16.
 
Leading the way for John Jay was Krystian Surdel and Dylan Senkiw, who totaled eight and six kills respectively. Godwin Sequeira had 22 assists and Rintaro Kato added nine digs.
 
For Purchase, Kubisch led the attack with six kills and two aces. Andreo Otiniano (JR/Mamaroneck, NY) dished out 14 assists and Joey Dyckman (FR/Verplanck, NY) added nine digs.
 
Purchase returns to action next Thursday, Feb. 21, as the Panthers take on the Cougars of Medgar Evers College.
