(Feb. 21, 2019) – The Purchase College men's volleyball team put up a strong effort Thursday night on the road, but host Medgar Evers College has started the season on a roll, completing a 3-1 (25-17, 22-25, 25-18, 25-21) win over the Panthers to stay perfect at 7-0.
Medgar Evers came out strong, scoring the first four points of the game. Purchase would end this run thanks to a kill by
Jeremiah Huntt (FR/Bronx, NY). Purchase would continue to struggle as the Panthers committed costly errors throughout the set which Medgar Evers capitalized on. After two 4-0 runs by the host Cougars, Purchase was down 24-13 but would remain strong, scoring the next four points before ultimately losing the set 25-17.
Putting the first set behind them, the Panthers came out firing in the second, scoring seven of the first 11 points. The Panthers put up a fight for the entire set which included 17 errors by the opposing Cougars. Purchase would go on to win that stanza, 25-22.
The third set saw an evenly-matched performance by both sides. After being down 9-5 early, Purchase rattled off four of the next five points, led by captain
Luke Kubisch (SR/Delmar, NY). Kubisch would tie the game at 12 apiece, thanks to a well placed serve which resulted in an ace.
Medgar Evers started to pull away, scoring nine of the next ten points. Purchase remained resilient, responding with 3 kills dished out by
Andreo Otiniano (JR/Mamaroneck, NY) and two errors by the opposing side. The Cougars would win the set 25-18.
The final set was a game of runs, as each team traded momentum throughout it. The Cougars went on a 5-0 run early which put them ahead 12-6. Purchase responded by winning four of the next five points, which included a kill by
Marc Prado (JR/Manhattan, NY) and a kill by Huntt.
The Cougars answered with five-consecutive points making the score 22-13. Purchase would not go down without a fight though, responding with six-consecutive points of their own, capped off by a kill by
Matthew Waterhouse (FR/Massapequa Park, NY). Medgar Evers ultimately came out on top, 25-21.
Medgar Evers was led Nius St. Clair who totaled 17 kills and 6 digs, and Emmanuel Jacquez who totaled 13 kills and 12 digs.
For Purchase, Kubisch led the charge with nine kills and three aces. Huntt totaled seven kills and six digs, while Otiniano tallied an impressive 23 assists.
Thomas Palko (FR/Southington, CT) led the defense with nine digs.
Purchase will be back in action at home next Wednesday, Feb. 27 against Hunter College.
