(Feb. 27, 2019) – Hunter College slipped past the Panthers Wednesday night at Purchase, taking the non-conference matchup, 3-0 (25-10, 25-12, 25-12).
Hunter looked its strongest in the first set. After Purchase freshman libero
Joey Dyckman (Verplanck, NY) recorded a Panther kill to tie the game at 4-4, the visiting Hawks answered with a 9-1 run to take a 13-5 lead. Hunter's offense continued to heat up as the Hawks closed the first set with a double-digit advantage (25-10).
A Hunter error put PC up on the board first in the second set, but the Hawks went on to score four unanswered points to take a 5-1 lead. The Panthers came within two of the visitors' lead (7-5) on a kill by junior setter
Andreo Otiniano (Mamaroneck, NY) but the rally was short-lived as Hunter tallied its next five points off Purchase errors. The Hawks went on to win the second set, 25-12.
Both teams put up points to open the third set. Trailing by two points (6-4), Purchase added to its score on a
Marc Prado (JR/Manhattan, NY) kill to come within one point of a tied match. Despite the Panthers' effort, they could not hold off the Hawk offense. Hunter put up nine straight points and closed the set out in front, 25-12.
Rookie standout
Jeremiah Huntt (Bronx, NY) paced Purchase with three kills, two assists and two blocks. Otiniano also highlighted the evening with three aces, seven assists and one kill. Kubisch finished with four kills, while Dyckman tallied six digs for the PC defense.
For Hunter, Blake Hogan fueled the victory with 11 kills on 15 attempts (.600). Michael Jazgarski, Qendrim Shala and Cyrus De Guzman each added another five kills, while Alec Helford put up a match-best 16 assists.
The Panthers will look to get back on track this Friday on the road. Purchase will travel to Wells College for a two-day non-conference tournament.
