(Mar. 4, 2019) – The Purchase College men's volleyball team took to the road this past weekend, competing in a two-day tournament hosted by Wells College. Facing tough non-conference opponents, the Panthers left Farenthold Athletic Wing with loses to Misericordia and SUNY Poly, Wells and Lasell, respectively.
VS MISERICORDIA
Purchase opened day one of the tournament with a 3-0 (25-7, 25-14, 25-14) loss to the Cougars of Misericordia University.
Panther first-year
Joe Higgins (FR/College Point, NY) led the team with four kills, while
Jeremiah Huntt (FR/Bronx, NY) and
Thomas Slomka (JR/Orchard Park, NY) chipped in with three kills apiece.
Andreo Otiniano (JR/Mamaroneck, NY) recorded 12 assists in the effort and rookie
Matthew Waterhouse (FR/Massapequa Park, NY) led the defense with two blocks.
The Cougars only trailed once the entire match when they fell behind 1-0 early in the second set.
For MU, Ryan posted a notable .818 hitting percentage while adding a block and service ace to his stat line. Billy Murphy totaled six kills, four blocks and a .625 hitting percentage. Dylan Sellitti was the team's assist leader with 19, while Jason Campbell and Matt Churchill each recorded a game-high four digs.
VS SUNY POLY
The Panthers wrapped up Friday action with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-18) loss to Wildcats of SUNY Poly.
Luke Kubisch (SR/Delmar, NY) paced the Panther squad with six kills. Huntt and Higgins added four and two kills, respectively, while
Joey Dyckman (FR/Verplanck, NY) led the PC defense with five digs. Otiniano chipped in with four digs and assisted on all except one of Purchase's kills.
Andrew Bertino recorded six of Poly's 10 total aces to lead all scorers in the category, while Adam Beitz put up a game-best 20 assists in the winning effort. Donovan Suguitan recorded six kills and three digs, while Matthew Russo shut down four Purchase attempts to lead his team in blocks.
VS WELLS
On day two of the tournament, Purchase opened against the host Express of Wells College and came out on the losing end of a 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-13) defeat.
Otiniano led the Panthers in kills (4), aces (2) and assists (9). Dyckman recorded a match-high eight digs and
Marc Prado (JR/Manhattan, NY) and
Erick Zajac (FR/Staten Island, NY) each had a block.
Wells junior setter Josh Undari became the program's all-time leader in assists during the match. He entered the day needing nine assists to break the record of 2,031, which was previously set by Scott Litvin '18.
Undari's career achievement came midway through the first set. He finished with 10 assists and four kills with three digs. Caden O'Loughlin had 12 kills and seven assists for Wells with five digs.
Robert Patzer had six kills and six digs.
VS LASELL
Purchase faced Lasell College in the final matchup of the weekend. The Lasers completed a 3-0 sweep over the Panthers with set scores of 25-14, 25-14 and 25-6.
Stats leaders for Purchase included Huntt with five kills, Otiniano with 11 assists and Kubisch with six digs. Zajac, Slomka and Higgins each talled two blocks in the loss.
For Lasell, Scott Sterenberg led all scorers with seven kills and a .600 attack percentage (7-1-10). Conor Leary-Watson tallied 12 winners with five kills and a career-high seven service aces. Nate Gallo chipped in with four kills, four aces and a match-high 17 assists.
Up next, the Panthers open Skyline Conference action at Sarah Lawrence College. The match is slated for this Wednesday at 7 p.m.
