Panthers Shutout in First Loss of 2019

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Purchase College baseball team suffered its first loss of the 2019 season Thursday morning, falling to Illinois Wesleyan University, 7-0, on the opening day of the Russmatt Central Florida Invitational.

With the loss, the Panthers dropped to 3-1 overall, while the Titans of Illinois Wesleyan improved to 6-3.

After a scoreless first inning between the two squads, Purchase nearly broke the 0-0 tie score in the bottom of the second by getting men on second and third with just one out. However, Titans' starting pitcher, Nick Brune (SR/Mundelein, IL), was able to work out of the jam, as he collected the final two outs on swinging strikeouts.

From there, the scoreless battle raged into the top of the sixth, before Illinois Wesleyan was finally able to break the deadlock, thanks to an RBI double from Evan Ranneklev (FR/Naperville, IL). Ranneklev later scored on a wild pitch, as the Titans grabbed a 2-0 lead.

It didn't take long for Illinois Wesleyan to build on that lead though, as the team poured in five runs in the seventh. Purchase nearly escaped the frame unscathed, but a two-out, three-RBI double from Eric Kozlowski (SO/Germantown Hills, IL) extended the Titans' lead to 5-0, before they tacked on two more later in the inning.

Brian Cunningham (SR/Westbury, NY) collected the loss for the Panthers, despite tossing a quality game. He went 6-innings, allowed two runs on five hits and finished with four K's. Unfortunately, the Panther bats were silenced on the day and couldn't give him any run support, as they knocked in just four hits.

That was in large part due to the performance of Brune, who tossed a 14-strikeout complete game for the Titans. Meanwhile, Kozlowski powered the offense for Illinois Wesleyan, as he collected three hits and three RBIs.

For Purchase, John Fitzgerald (JR/Wantagh, NY) finished with two hits.

The Panthers will be right back in action again tomorrow (March 15th) for a doubleheader, as they take on Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. First pitch for game one is set for 3:30 p.m.
