BRONX, N.Y. - The Purchase College softball team split a pair of contests Wednesday afternoon, as the Panthers opened the 2019 season at Lehman College.
Purchase dropped game one, 6-2, before bouncing back with a dominating, 9-1, victory to close out the day. With the split decision, the Lightning of Lehman fell to 1-5 on the season.
In the opening contest, the hosts jumped out to a quick advantage, as they tallied three runs in the first inning and another in the second. The score remained 4-0 until the top of the sixth, when
Kelly Agostini (SO/Centereach, NY)smacked a double to right field to score
Cassidy Montes (SO/Yonkers, NY).
However, it didn't take long for the Lightning to answer back, as they added a pair of runs in the bottom half of the sixth. The Panthers were able to score another run in the seventh off a couple of Lehman errors, but ultimately lost, 6-2.
Agostini finished with the loss in game one. The sophomore allowed six runs (three earned) on six hits, but tallied five strikeouts over her 6-inning complete game.
Emily Nugent (FR/Bronx, NY) finished with a hit, a run and a walk in the effort.
For Lehman, Diamond Villegas (SR/Bronx, NY) collected the win, as she fanned nine while allowing just two runs (one earned) on five hits in a complete game.
In game two however, the bats and arms came alive for the Panthers, as they cruised to a 9-1 win.
Purchase struck first, as the guests knocked in four runs in the third. In the fourth, Agostini singled to center field to score two more to push the lead to 6-0.
Lehman was finally able to get on the board in the fifth on a passed ball, but that was all the hosts got, as Montes held the hosts to just two hits over her 6-inning complete game. She also finished with 11 strikeouts in the win.
As for the Purchase offense, Agostini powered the way with three hits, two RBIs and two runs.
Daniella Edelson (SR/Hopewell Junction, NY) added a pair of hits and RBIs, while
Kiara Almonte (FR/Manhattan, NY) finished with two runs, a hit and a stolen base.
Tiffany Adames (SO/Brooklyn, NY) received the loss for Lehman. She allowed four runs (one earned) on four hits in just 2 2/3 innings of work.
