PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College softball team was defeated in both games of a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon, falling, 4-3 and 9-3, at the College of New Rochelle in a non-conference matchup.

With the results, the Panthers dropped to 1-3 overall. The Blue Angels of New Rochelle improved to 7-3.

In game one, the hosts struck first on an RBI double from Amanda Blair (FR/Carpinteria, CA) in the bottom of the second. The lead was short lived though, as Purchase knocked in three runs in the next half inning. 

Kiara Almonte (FR/Manhattan, NY) opened the inning with a walk, before advancing to second on Victoria Capone-Froio's (SR/Yonkers, NY) dropped fly during the next at-bat. One batter later, senior Kelly Hayes (Staten Island, NY) began the scoring for the Panthers with an RBI single. 

Sophomore Kelly Agostini (Centereach, NY) singled in two more runs during the next plate appearance, to push Purchase's lead to 3-1.

From there, the score remained the same until the bottom of the fifth, when New Rochelle scored twice to tie the ballgame. In the top of the sixth, the Panthers were able to get Danielle Morelli (FR/Riverdale, NY) to third base, but couldn't take advantage and get her home. 

In the bottom of the seventh, a leadoff single from Samantha Gutierrez (JR/Fullerton, CA) started the inning. During the next at-bat, Gutierrez stole second and advanced to third on an error, before Gaby Hay (SO/Little River Academy, TX) hit a deep fly ball to center field, allowing Gutierrez to easily tag up at third to score the winning run. 

Agostini finished with the loss for Purchase, as she threw all 6.1 innings and allowed four runs on eight hits. Meanwhile, Hay collected the win for the Blue Angels, as she gave up three runs (two earned) on six hits over 7 innings of work. She also fanned 11 in the winning effort.

Hayes and Shawna Smith (SO, Kingston, NY) each tallied two hits apiece for the Panthers. 

In game two, the guests looked to rebound, as Hayes drove in Capone-Froio on a sacrifice fly in first inning.

However, New Rochelle was not fazed and responded with a vengeance. The Blue Angels answered by scoring four runs in the first, one in the second and two in the third to jump out to a 7-1 lead. 

Smith scored a run off a Cassidy Montes (SO/Yonkers, NY) groundout in the fourth, as Purchase cut the deficit to 7-2. But the hosts added two more runs in the fifth, as they cruised to an eventual, 9-3 win.

Montes received the loss for the Panthers, as she was tagged for nine runs (four earned) on nine hits. The reigning Skyline Pitcher of the Week did tally six strikeouts in the effort though. 

For New Rochelle, Valerie Romano (JR/Fullerton, CA) earned the win. She pitched all 7 innings and gave up just three runs (one earned). 

Capone-Froio finished with two hits for Purchase, while Ismarie Marrero (FR/Bronx, NY) slapped three hits for the Blue Angels.

Up next for the Panthers is another road doubleheader, as the team takes on Sarah Lawrence College on March 23rd. First pitch for game one is set for noon.
