PURCHASE, N.Y. - After scoring just 10 runs over the past six games combined, the Purchase College baseball team exploded with double digit run totals in each game of a doubleheader sweep over John Jay College Saturday afternoon.
The Panthers took the first game, 10-3, before managing to improve on that score in game two, 11-1. With the wins, Purchase moved to 7-4 overall, while the Bloodhounds of John Jay dropped to 6-11.
Purchase opened the scoring with a big inning in the bottom of the third, as the hosts drove in five runs in the frame. The first run came from
Gregory Walsh (SR/Bethpage, NY), who scored
Nick Tuozzola (SR/Milford, CT) on a sacrifice fly.
During the next at-bat,
Dylan Flynn (SO/Hauppauge, NY) smashed an RBI triple to left field, to make it 2-0. After another sacrifice fly added a third run, this one coming from
Brian Cunningham (SR/Westbury, NY), back-to-back RBI singles from
Matthew Villalobos (SR/Brooklyn, NY) and
Zack Dicanio (SO/Mastic, NY) pushed the score to 5-0 in favor of Purchase.
From there, the Panthers started to cruise. Starting pitcher,
Cody Hennequin (SO/Milford, CT), rolled to a 1-2-3 top of the fourth inning, which got the bats right back into action for the hosts. In the bottom half of the frame, Walsh singled to get a man on base, before Flynn got Walsh home on his second RBI triple in as many innings.
However, despite the deficit, the Bloodhounds didn't go down without a fight. They scored one run in the fifth and two in the sixth, to make the contest 6-3 entering the bottom of the sixth inning. But the Panthers' offense was just getting started on the day. The hosts drilled in three more runs in the frame, extending their advantage to 10-3.
That score line is where the first game ended, as Purchase tallied the 10 runs on 12 hits. Flynn finished with three hits (two triples), two RBIs, two runs scored and a walk in the win. Meanwhile, Walsh, Villalobos and
Gavin Brien (JR/Brooklyn, NY) each collected two hits apiece. On the mound, Hennequin collected the win following his 5.2 innings of work. The sophomore finished with five strikeouts and allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits.
For John Jay, Sean Napier (JR/Bellmore, NY) received the loss. He gave up six runs (all earned) on eight hits.
In game two, the bats remained hot for the Panthers, as the team cruised to an 11-1 win. However, the real story of the game was starting pitcher,
CJ Owens (JR/Ridge, NY).
The junior tossed a 7-inning complete game, and allowed just the one run on four hits. During his first six innings, Owens threw 1-2-3 innings in all of them, as a 6-4-3 double play in the second inning took care of Owens' only base runner before the seventh. While Owens dominated on the mound all afternoon, the bats provided him more than enough run support, as Purchase finished with 11 runs on 11 hits.
All of the Panthers' were scored over a three-inning stretch, as the hosts poured in six runs in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the sixth. Cunningham and
Jackson Hill (JR/Brooklyn, NY) each finished with two RBIs, while
John Fitzgerald (JR/Wantagh, NY),
Patrick Wallace (JR/Manorville, NY), Brien and Dicanio each knocked in an RBI.
Up next for Purchase is another home doubleheader, as the team takes on Yeshiva University tomorrow (March 24th). First pitch is set for 11 a.m. and you can follow those games right here.Â
