NEWBURGH, N.Y. - The Purchase College men's lacrosse team lost a Skyline Conference matchup Wednesday evening, as the Panthers fell at Mount Saint Mary College, 11-6.
The defeat dropped Purchase to 5-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play. Meanwhile, the Knights of Mount Saint Mary improved to 4-8 and 1-1 in the Skyline.
To begin the contest, things opened slowly, as neither side scored during the first 10 minutes. Mount Saint Mary finally got the scoring started with a man-up goal with just over two minutes left in the period, only to see the Panthers respond with a man-up goal from
Zach Zarrella (SO/Leominster, MA) a minute and half later.
In the second quarter, the Knights began to take control, as they rallied off three straight goals to open the frame.
However, the Panthers continued to battle, as back-to-back strikes from
Christian Ishoo (FR/Tarrytown, NY) and
Dan Ohrem (JR/Ridgefield, CT) got Purchase back within a goal with five minutes remaining in the opening half.
Over those final minutes, the two sides traded one goal each, as the guests entered halftime down 5-4. In the second half, the battle continued to rage early on.
After a Knights' goal less than two minutes into the half,
Dylan Gethicker (SR/Lime Lake, NY) found the back of the net for Purchase, making it a 6-5 game with 13 minutes to go in the third.
From there though, something just clicked for the Knights, on both sides of the ball. Over the next 16 minutes, the hosts outscored Purchase, 3-0, to grab a 9-5 lead early into the fourth quarter. While the Panthers were able to cut into the deficit on a goal from Ohrem, they weren't able to get any closer the rest of the way, as Mount Saint Mary held off Purchase, 11-6.
On the night, the two sides were identical on saves and turnovers. However, the Knights won the shots on goal battle, 23-18, and finished with better numbers in ground balls, face offs and clear attempts.
Gethicker led the Panthers with five points (2g, 3a), four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Matt Sayegh (JR/Hopewell Junction, NY) finished with 12 saves and the loss, while Eli Laikin (JR/Oak Bluffs, MA) collected the win for Mount Saint Mary.
Ryan Maraio (JR/Staten Island, NY) finished with a game-high six points (3g, 3a) for the Knights.
Up next for Purchase is a home Skyline game against Farmingdale State on April 13th. That game is set to begin at noon and you can follow it here.Â
