PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College softball team lost a pair of Skyline Conference games Friday afternoon, falling to the Knights of Mount Saint Mary College, 6-0 and 4-2.
In game one, the hosts were limited to just one hit, as Bridget Bennett (JR/Gardiner, NY) was dealing on the mound for the Knights. Bennett finished with a 7-inning complete game win and fanned five. The only hit she gave up came in the fourth on a single by
Kelly Agostini (SO/Centereach, NY).
Meanwhile, the bats of Mount Saint Mary provided more than enough run support, as the guests knocked in six runs on 10 hits. Three Knights finished with two hits in the game one win.
Cassidy Montes (SO/Yonkers, NY) received the loss for Purchase.Â
Following the opening game defeat, the Panthers came back with renewed energy to start the second contest. It paid off immediately, as the hosts knocked in two runs in the bottom of the first inning, snapping a three-game scoreless streak.
Victoria Capone-Froio (SR/Yonkers, NY) started the frame with a single, followed by a double from Montes. Agostini then walked to load the bases with no outs, before
Kelly Hayes (SR/Staten Island, NY) hit an infield single to knock in the opening run.
Following two straight outs,
Kiara Almonte (FR/Manhattan, NY) was nailed by a pitch with the bases loaded, as Purchase went up 2-0. The Knights managed a strikeout during the next at-bat to end the frame, as the Panthers left three stranded.
After a shaky start by their starting pitcher, the Knights went to the bullpen and called on Bennett to come in and pitch the team to victory once more. The junior delivered, as she stymied the Panthers again to the tune of just three hits and a walk over the final 5.1 innings of play.Â
With Bennett back on the mound dealing, the Mount Saint Mary bats were able to slowly but surely come alive to get the visitors back into the game.
After being held scoreless to begin, the guests managed to tie the contest at 2-2 in the fifth inning with two RBI doubles, before taking the lead in the sixth on a sacrifice fly. In the seventh, the Knights added an insurance run, then held off the Panthers for the 4-2 win.
The win was the second of the day for Bennett, who finished with six strikeouts in game two. Agostini collected the loss for Purchase, despite allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits in a 7-inning complete game.
Montes led the Panthers' offense, as she went 4-for-4 with a double. Hayes added two hits and an RBI in the effort.
Up next for Purchase is another Skyline home doubleheader, as the team hosts the College of Old Westbury on April 14th. The first game is set to start at 11 a.m. and you can follow it here.Â
