NEWBURGH, NY – Purchase College women's lacrosse dropped a tough Skyline Conference matchup, 15-8, Mount Saint Mary College Monday night.
The host Knights (1-10, 1-4 SKY) broke open the scoring in the first two minutes of play with a goal by Courtney Condron, but Purchase (1-8, 0-5 SKY) fired back with a goal from sophomore midfielder
Maddy Mecca (Oceanside, NY) to tie the game at 1-apiece. The Panthers later scored three unanswered goals to take a 4-2 lead, thanks to freshman
Sigrid Cassell (Huntington, NY), Mecca and sophomore midfielder
Gabriella Castles (Bethpage, NY), respectively.
The Mount responded with five straight goals before the halftime intermission to take a 7-4 lead. Condron found the back of the net twice during the run while Dolan, Nicole Cervone and Alyssa DiMare each scored once.
Mount Saint Mary held a 16-13 advantage in shots and 13-9 in shots on goal at the half. The Knights also held a groundballs edge at 16-11 while draw controls were even at six apiece.
The home team continued to fire away after the break, stretching its lead to 11-4 with a 4-0 run to open the second half.
After two goals from Mecca cut the lead to six, MSMC's Megan Shalvey scored her first goal of the night followed by Condron's sixth goal of the night. DiMare and Annie Dolan added two more goals before the end of the contest to give the Knights their first win of the season.
Despite the loss, Castles netted her eighth hat trick of the season with four goals, to go along with four draw controls. Mecca recorded her third hat trick of the season with three goals and chipped in with one assist, five ground balls, two cause turnovers and a pair of draw controls. Cassell added a goal, five groundballs and four draw controls.
Condron scored a career-high six goals in the victory for the Mount. She added to a notable night with an assist, two draw controls, one groundball and one caused turnover. Dolan finished with four goals on the night and one assist while DiMare added two goals and six draw controls. Nicole Cervone finished with one goal, two assists, six groundballs and three caused turnovers.
Jackie Finkel picked up the win for the Knights, making nine saves and picking up five groundballs. Panther junior
Brianna Pirozzi (Staten Island, NY) made 10 saves in the loss for the Panthers.
Mount Saint Mary finished with a 30-26 advantage in shots as well as a 25-17 advantage in shots on goal. The Knights also held the edge in groundballs at 31-20 while Purchase held a slim advantage in draw controls at 13-12.
The Panthers return to their home field this Thursday to take on the Privateers of SUNY Maritime in a Skyline game starting at 5 p.m.
