Baseball Defeated in Twin Bill by St. Joseph's Long Island

PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College baseball team suffered a pair of losses Saturday afternoon, as the Panthers fell to St. Joseph's College - Long Island, 3-1 and 9-0, in a Skyline Conference doubleheader.

With the results, the Panthers are 15-15 overall and 5-9 in the conference. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles of St. Joseph's improved their record to 17-16 and 9-9.

In game one, it was the hosts who got on the board first, as they manufactured a run in the second inning off a St. Joseph's error.

After two outs started the frame, a walk by Brian Cunningham (SR/Westbury, NY) and a fielding error on St. Joseph's kept the inning alive for Purchase. During the next at-bat, with runners on first and second, Jackson Hill (JR/Brooklyn, NY) smacked a hard-hit ball to the shortstop, but it was cleanly fielded and tossed over to first base.

However, the first baseman failed to complete the process and make the catch, which allowed Cunningham to easily score from second, as he was rounding the bases hard with two outs.

The lead was short lived for the Panthers though, as the guests drove in three runs in top of the third to snatch the advantage.

In the bottom half of the inning, Purchase had a chance to get a run back as Dylan Flynn (SO/Hauppauge, NY) opened the frame with a double, before advancing to third off a single from Nick Lasala (JR/Massapequa Park, NY) with just one out. But the Golden Eagles' defense came through huge for the team, as they were able to turn an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play and keep the score, 3-1.

In the fourth and eight innings, Purchase again got a men to third base, but failed to bring either home, as the defense of the guests held the Panthers scoreless the rest of the day.

In the end, the guests claimed the victory, as Cody Hennequin (SO/Milford, CT) was tagged with the loss for Purchase. The sophomore tossed 8.1 innings in the effort, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits. He also finished with three strikeouts. For St. Joseph's, Tim Woodford (JR/Smithtown, NY) received the win, after he went eight innings and gave up just the one unearned run on five hits.

In the second game of the doubleheader, there was no respite for the hosts on the day, as they fell in the contest, 9-0. The Golden Eagles erupted for six runs in the first, before adding two in the third and one in the fifth.

Five Panthers finished with a hit in the effort, while Cunningham collected the loss for the hosts. Austin Turner (SR/Lake Grove, NY) finished with the win for St. Joseph's, after he threw four innings of shutout relief.

Purchase will look to get back on track when it returns to the field on April 24th at Manhattanville College. That contest is set to begin at 4 p.m. and you can follow it here.
