PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College softball team lost twice Sunday afternoon, as the Rams of Farmingdale State swept the Panthers in a Skyline Conference matchup.
The Panthers fell by the scores of 8-0 and 6-5, which dropped Purchase's record to 7-13 overall and 4-6 in the conference. Meanwhile, Farmingdale remained undefeated in league play at 10-0 and is now 10-12 overall.Â
In game one, the Panthers had no answers for Farmingdale's starting pitcher, Julia Walpole (JR/Mahopac, NY). Walpole tossed a 7-inning complete game, and allowed just two hits along the way. She was also aided by significant run support, as the guests scored twice in the second, twice in the fourth, three in the fifth and one more in the sixth.
For Purchase,
Cassidy Montes (SO/Yonkers, NY) was tagged with the loss, while
Kelly Hayes (SR/Staten Island, NY) and
Daniella Edelson (SR/Hopewell Junction, NY) each collected a hit in the effort.
In game two, the guests picked up right where they left off, as they scored three runs in the first, two in the second and one in the third to jump in front, 6-0. Unlike the first game however, the Panthers were able to mount a comeback this time around, as the team exploded for five runs in the bottom in the fifth.Â
Edelson and
Gabriella Carnevale (SO/Carteret, NJ) both nailed singles to start the inning, before
Victoria Capone-Froio (SR/Yonkers, NY) drove them home on a two-run RBI triple. During the next at-bat, Montes scored Capone-Froio on a sacrifice fly to make it 6-3.
After a single from
Kelly Agostini (SO/Centereach, NY) kept the inning alive, senior
Kelly Hayes (Staten Island, NY) crushed a ball to right field and used her speed to score a two-run inside-the-park home run, which trimmed the deficit to 6-5.Â
After a quick 1-2-3 inning in the sixth kept things close, Purchase nearly completed the comeback in the bottom half of the frame, as the hosts got runners to second and third with just one out. Unfortunately, the Panthers weren't able to drive in either player, as the Rams held off the hosts the rest of the way to collect the win.
Jaxie Collard (SR/Deer Park, NY) received the win for Farmingdale, after he 5.2 innings of work. Meanwhile, Madeleine Smith (SO/San Diego, CA) finished with the save, following her 1.1 innings of shutout pitching.
For Purchase, Agostini collected the loss. She allowed six runs (two earned) on seven hits and struck out two. Edelson led the offense with three hits, while Hayes and Carnevale each added two hits apiece.
Up next for the softball team is a non-conference road doubleheader, as the Panthers travel to New Paltz to take on the Hawks on April 9th. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. and you can follow it here.Â
