Panthers set program record with season-opening shutouts

BROOKLYN, NY – The Purchase College women's soccer team shutout Medgar Evers, 15-0, on Tuesday night to earn its second win of the season. The Panthers, now 2-0 under first-year head coach Julie Grutzner, made program history with the back-to-back shutouts to open the season.

Purchase broke the scoring ice in the opening minute on a goal from sophomore attacker Rebecca Colgan (Valley Stream, NY). It was the first of the season and first of three-consecutive goals in the game for the Panther standout.

Lauren Pudelka (FR/Danbury, CT), Brett Robison (SR/Franklin Square, NY), Madeline Mecca (JR/Oceanside, NY) and Michelle Gomez (FR/Oceanside, NY) each added first-half goals, while Allie Scarpa (JR/Vineland, NJ) found the back of the net in the 32nd and 35th minutes to give the Panthers a 9-0 lead at the break.

Senior tri-captain Ashley Blom (Bethpage, NY) opened the second-half scoring 2:25 into play with an unassisted shot from outside the box. Less than two minutes later, Blom notched her second goal of the game and season.

Gabby Castles (JR/Bethpage, NY), Amber Rodriquez (SO/Queens, NY), Brianna Pirozzi (SR/Staten Island, NY) were next in the Panther scoring line before Gomez capped Purchase's commanding 15-0 lead with the final goal of the game at 74:45.

The Panthers recorded a notable 33 shots (22 on goal) against the Cougars and led 10-1 in corner kicks.

Senior goalkeeper Amber Yarter (Albany, NY) earned Purchase's second-straight shutout while Carphy Mathurin turned away seven shots in defeat for the Cougars.

Up next, Purchase opens home action against Brooklyn College. The non-conference kickoff is slated for Thursday (Sept. 12) at 7 p.m.
