PURCHASE, NY - The Purchase College men's soccer team was defeated in a non-conference matchup Wednesday evening, falling to Lehman College, 1-0.
With the result, the Panthers are now 1-2 overall. The Lightning meanwhile, improved to 5-0.
Following a first half of play that saw neither side threaten offensively, the visitors' attack quickly changed that narrative in the second frame, as Lehman lit up the scoreboard in the 50th minute.
The strike came from Marcos Garcia (FR/New Rochelle, NY), who received the ball at the top of the penalty box and buried it into the bottom right corner. Mubarak Ouro (SO/Bronx, NY) collected the assist on the play.
Over the next 35 minutes, the Panthers had a few chances with free kicks and waves of attacking play, but were unable to find an equalizer.
Purchase keeper
Mario Olmedo (FR/East Elmhurst, NY) kept the hosts in the contest over the final five minutes, as he made a pair of clutch saves, parrying away a point-blank shot and tipping a ball over the crossbar at the last second.
But in the end, Purchase's offensive just couldn't find the back of the goal and Lehman was able to escape with the road victory. On the night, Lehman outshot the Panthers 19-7 overall and recorded a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
Olemdo finished with a career-high nine saves in the loss. For the Lightning, Demiraldo Grunasi (SO/Florence, Italy) collected two saves and the win in relief of the starting keeper during the final 45 minutes.
Up next for Purchase is the first road contest of the season, as the Panthers travel to St. Joseph's - Brooklyn for the start of Skyline Conference play. That game is set for 7 p.m. on September 17th. You can follow it here.
